Windows not assigning drive letter to flash drives

Hi there,

Firstly let me say this is driving me nuts. I have tried two separate USB3 16GB thumb drives on my Asus Windows 8.1 laptop and to  no avail.

I can see them in device manager under installed storage devices and in disk manager I can see them but with no drive letter assigned. If I try and assign a drive letter I get the following error

The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date

If I use command prompt diskpart then list disk I can see the thumb drives but when I try and clean them or assign a letter it says there is no disk selected

I have two other USB3 drives that work fine as well as an external and some network drives

I have also tried both drives on another windows 8 machine and they are fine. Seems like there is an issue with my laptop with recognising new USB3 drives but I do not know where to start.

I have tried assigning the drive letter with Easus Partition Wizard but always fails unable to mount drive.

I did have brief success with the Toshiba drive by running cmd and automount disk enabled and then it was assigned a drive letter and I could get into it but after ejecting and reinserting the same issue

Any thoughts or assitance would be apprecitated

Thanks for the reply.

None of this worked but I did manage to find the culprit. I have a Seagate 3TB hard drive and in order to get it working on Windows 8 I had to install SeaGate's Disc Wizard, however this caused USB drives to not be assigned. After uninstalling Disc Wizard and then formatting the 3TB drive as GPT all is working now.

Hope this helps anyone else who has a similar issue.
