Have you tried running Messenger in Vista compatibility mode? Open up Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger. Right mouse click on msnmsgr.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility (tab) -> Check both 'Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows Vista' -> Press OK.

My Windows Live Messenger (Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8050.1202)) works fine but I think it's a bit strange how it works in Windows 7. It's not so easy to access the main window. you have to click the icon in your taskbar (not system tray) and then click ont he picture of yourself. I am not sure if this normal. Also my preview for WLM does alwaysnot seem to work, yet often it does work. I miss the icon in the system tray. It was faster to get the main contact list up but I do like the new right click feature where I can choose the status immediately.
