Windows hangs when starting for the first time on the day
When i first turn on my computer each day Windows fails to star with no error, i have to do a hard reboot to get it up and runnig, i'm unable to find any errors on even viewer, the only one i can see is the log that indicates that Windows hasn't shut down correctly 30 seconds before... anyone facing similar problems? Windows 7 x64 running on: Phenom 9850x4 in Asus M3A motherboard with 4GB RAM.

Hi Static, It could be a hardware issue. Can you try swapping RAM modules out and see if this helps? Also do you have this issue in your previous OS (non Win7)? It can be caused by hardware or startup programs. You may also try Clean Boot Mode. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I think i found the problem, it was the driver of my Geforce 8400 GS the cause of the problem, i'm not a gamer so i was using the driver WDDM 1.1 from Windows update, i had it that way before reinstalling, more than that i thought it was better that way because of Windows being beta that driver should be better integrated but it seems like i was wrong... now the problem seems to be gone, i'll report back if its not, thanks for your help.

Hi, Can you try doing the following: 1. Start -> cmd 2. Right click on cmd and select "Run as administrator" 3. Type: sfc /scannow If the above doesn't work, can you try if booting in safe mode will give you this isssue? If it works in Safe Mode, most probably it is caused by your drivers. Give it a try and post back! :)Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

can you press f8 just after bios-boot is complete, enable vga mode. Then (if possible) choose a standard vga driver for the card. power down, then restart. I think you were close to figuring it out, or you already did figure out at least part of it.But I hope you do write when you finally found the answer

Enabling VGA mode doesn't work either it wont boot anyway so i guess VGA is not the problem...

You may open Event Viewer, locate to Applications and Services\Microsoft\Windows\Diagnostics-Performance. Look for the events whose ID is 100. Details of these events record the boot time for each process. Please paste the details in your post. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, Those recorded boot processes are normal. From this situation, we could consider that the failed boot processes exit with hardware problems, but not software or system issues. Because of that, related information cannot be logged. I suggest that you upgrade your BIOS. Also upgrade the driver of your video card, network device, etc. However, since currently most of the latest hardware drivers are for Windows Vista, they may not compatible with Windows 7 beta. If the issue persists after upgrade drivers and BIOS, you may wait for hardware manufacturers to release drivers that are compatible with Windows 7 systems.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Well the bootlog (now i managed to get it loged) shows that when it hangs its loading the Nvidia driver, i'm using the beta driver for Windows 7 and now hangs are more sparse but still occurs I hope future updates addresses this issue...
April 28th, 2009 3:10pm

Well the problem is, definitelly, the Nvidia driver, it has been reported in other posts too with other kind of hangs and restarts, i don't have any of those but from a fresh start, the computer hangs 2 of 3 times, i really hope they fix it soon, i want to say again that i had Windows 7 installed on a .vhd image working fine for more than a month before and i fail to see the difference now, the driver is the same one...
