Windows detects wireless network adapter as an ethernet controller.  Try to install driver manually and no help listed.
Running XP pro version 5.1. Old wireless card failed. Uninstalled software for it. Downloaded software for card bought at about the same time--TrendNET TEW-423PI card. Put card into computer then computer classified it as an Ethernet controller. This is Wrong!! Should be Network adapter. In Found New Hardware wizard tried 1. install from location-- 2, don't search. 3, Changed hardware type to Network adapters. 4, have disk- Chose folder with driver. Gives Error The Specified location does not contain information about your hardware. This is a lie. This is the folder containing the driver recommended for install. Tried removing card, uninstalling software, changing slots, reinstalling. Any ideas on how to get windows XP to recognize my wireless card as a different type?1 person needs an answerI do too

I don't think the problem here is how xp recognizes the card before the driver is installed, especially if xp doesn't have it's own driver. Did you try select "search for the best driver in these locations" (same window where you selected "don't search"), then select "include this location in the search" and select the folder where you driver is? make sure the folder you selected has .inf file in it (i.e C:\Utility TEW-421PC_423PI\Driver\WIN2KXP) The official drivers for this card (http://www.trendnet.com/downloads/list_subcategory.asp?SUBTYPE_ID=367) has it's own installer, so if installing driver manually fails, perhaps try use their installer.
