Windows backup won't start
Hello. This is the first time I post something here, btw. Ok, this is the problem: I have a Windows 7 Professional x64 (7600), which I got from MSDN-AA. I have two hdd installed on this computer, both are SATA-II. Since the second one is empty, I decided to use it as a backup disk. So, I started "Windows Backup" (aka "Backup and Restore"). There I found: "Windows Backup has not been set up." and a link to "set up backup". I clicked. That was 1 hour ago and Windows Backup didn't start until now. Well, on some testing version of Windows 7 I started Windows backup, but now I can't. I don't have any idea of what's happening, it just won't start at all. Ah, and I won't cancel the starting process. I can click there, but it keeps on the same screen, trying to stop the starting (this makes any sense?). I don't know if this is related, but I've found this on my eventvwr: Error | VDS Basic Provider Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004 This error happens when I try to start Windows Backup. Yes, I know this can be related to SPTD driver. I tried to remove it, but it didn't solve the problem, so I reinstalled. I can remove if someone ask me to do that. This is it. Any idea about how to solve this would be great! :) Thanks in advance, Ricardo. PS: sorry for any english mistake ;)

Hi debugbr, After reviewing the problem description, could you please help me to confirm the following questions? 1. Can you save any files on the second hard disk? 2. Are there any error messages when trying to configure the Windows Backup settings? This configuration of Windows Backup frozen can be caused by the following two possible factors. 1. The Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service is disabled. 2. Some system components might be damaged. 3. Some Other applications might conflict the configuration of Windows Backup. I suggest we try the following suggestions to check the issue. Verify the VSS service ======================== 1. Click Start, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. Note: If UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click Continue. 2. Double click Volume Shadow Copy Service and switch to General tab. 3. Change the Startup type to Automatic and click Apply. 4. Click Start and click OK. Whats the result? If it does not work, I also suggest you run System File Checker to check the issue. Run System File Checker ======================== 1. Click the Start button, All Programs and Accessories. 2. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. 3. Type "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and press Enter. Note: There is a space between "SFC" and "/Scannow". If some files cannot be fixed, please run the following command to collect the sfcdetails.txt. findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >C:\sfcdetails.txt Please refer to Drive C to find the sfcdetails.txt file and send it to me via SkyDrive. If it will not work, you may try to start Windows Backup in Clean Boot. This article also applies for Windows 7. Can the configuration of Windows Backup finish in Clean Boot and can you start Windows Backup in Normal Mode now? If the issue persists, please send me the System Information and Event Log. Please upload them to SkyDrive and provide us the link. I would like to analyze them to find out the possible clues. How to collect the System Information ======================== 1. Click Start, type in msinfo32 (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and then press Enter. 2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file. 3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". 4. Send the compressed file to me. How to collect the Event Log ======================== 1. Click "Start", input "eventvwr" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Right click on "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click Save. 3. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". 4. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and send them to me.

Thanks for trying to help me. Yes, I can write anything on the second HDD. I've found the problem, but I forgot to post here: it's an internal problem with a software that I'm using, Gladinet Cloud Desktop. It maps a network drive (fake network drive, but that's how it works) and than I can put my files there (like SkyDrive files...). Since this happens only with Gladinet open, it's obvious that the problem is with it. I'm trying to solve the problem with the developers of that application. I think this topic could help someone who had this problem before and uses Gladinet. Thanks anyway! Ricardo

Hi. I thought I'd add something to this since I had the same problem. I'd click on "Set up backup", the dialog box would very briefly flash on my taskbar, but it would close before even displaying on the screen. I had WinRAR installed. When right-clicking on a file, folder, or drive, WinRAR would add additional options to the popup menu for compressing the target or adding it to an archive. Apparently, this conflicted with the wizard for setting up backup. Once I uninstalled WinRAR, the problem went away. I'd recommend to anyone having this problem to check to see if there's any installed software that lets you perform additional actions on drives or files.
