Windows XP slow shutdown
About a month ago (~Oct 1/10) I noticed my computer was taking about 5 minutes to shut down or reset. Boot up is normal. When I shut down, the message "Windows is shutting down" stays up for about 5 minutes.I also noticed that fast user switching is not working even though it is enabled.I checked that system event log, and each time I boot up, the following error is recorded:" The following boot start or system start drivers failed to load: TermDD"I ran a boot log which recorded multiple entries of:"Did not load driver\systemroot\system32\drivers\termdd.sys"Also, under device manager, the terminal server keyboard driver, and terminal server mouse driver have yellow exclamation marks.I'm running XP Home SP3 with current updates. All other functions appear normal.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since this is the Windows Update forum, which deals with updating issues, suggest you repost this to the Windows XP Performance and maintenance forum or wait until a Moderator moves it there.MowGreen Windows Expert IT Pro - Consumer Security

How does this pertain to Windows Update functionality, Mike? The above notwithstanding, there' s a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted software), and adware.https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page: https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/Otherwise...1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspxNB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm2b. Vista or Win7 (but not Vista 64-bit or Win7 64-bit) => Run this scan instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm3.
