Using crossover cable to connect 2 computers is the same as create a network.After connect the 2 computers, go to network connections in Control Panel, in Local Area Connection Properties, double click Internet Protocol Version 4, change to Use the following IP address, setup IP as 192.168.1.1 (second computer is 192.168.1.2), Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 (both), default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (both),

I am having the same problem but I can't even reach the stage where your recommendation comes in. I have an older windows XP laptop and now having a new windows 7 laptop. Similarly, I want to transfer files from the old to the new laptop. However, when I plug in the cross-over cable, nothing was shown on either of the laptop that indicate a connection. I thought it was the cable's problem but when I connect the windows XP laptop to a windows 2000 PC, it shows the connection. Is there any setting on windows 7 PC that I have missed? I have realised that the connection kept "flicking". When I look at control panel > network and internet > network connection on windows 7, the LAN adaptor icon came on for 2 sec and then off, then on again few sec later and then off.

A other way to try transferring is to connect both computers thru a router or wireless router via connecting a pair of standard Ethernet cables running two the two laptops. The router itself will handle the crossover internally.

I am also having the same problem. I have connected a desktop having windows XP & a Laptop having windows 7. In the notification area, it is showig Lan is connected. But data is not transferring. changed IPs from Class C to Class B. But noting is working. Ping report is " Ping 192.168.0.2............Reply from 192.168.0.2: Destination Host Unreachable. This is not only with me. This is with two more users with same windows 7 & windows XP. I think, There is some setting in Win 7, Which we don't know. or, Windows 7 is having this bug. Microsoft Please tell us. or resolve the bug.
