hello Neither on of my Windows XP Defragmenters has been updated since 2001. It will not complete defragmentation or file compaction because it wasn't designed for the changes made in service pack 3. I've tried it in both the regular and safe modes on my existing five year old hard drive and a new exernal hard drive with window xp on both. The computer that I recently sold had the same characteristics as well as others that I've seen since service pack three was installed on them. This is a common complaint for many Windows XP pro and media center users. The percentage of defragmentation (red) remaining was insignificant, however file compaction was not [(If you can trust the graphic representations for contiguous files (blue) showing them separated by random open space (white)]. Some fragmented files which remain may be considered by the system as unmovable because of changes made through the updating processes of service pack 3. It may be related to more recent changes made to the NTFS filing system in Windows XP of which Windows Defragmenter doesn't recognize. If there is someone reading this thread who works on Windows XP Pro or Media Center computers they should be able to tell us the frequency of this defragmentation issue. I've seen it on at least four other computers besides my own and I have not as yet seen a service pack 3 system where this issue was not present. I would not worry about it unless the defragmentation and decompaction issues are significant enough to cause noticible performance issues. I believe that as far as Windows XP is concerned, updates to correct this issue may never be seen. Best Regards Spacejunkie1
