Windows XP VPN to Windows 7 office pc
We have a Sonicwall TZ 170 and have successfully setup a VPN for our remote users. We recently added 2 Windows 7 computers for 2 of the users at the office. They are unable to connect from home since the new computer installation. IP addresses have stayed the same. I also setup a new Network Connection on the new computers for the VPN connection. The error message is that they are unable to connect to the new computers. Do I need to setup that new Network Connection to be visible to the Public? Also, I can connect to the new Windows 7 computers in-house. Thanks

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to verify what exact error is received when trying to connect to VPN. According to your description, this issue can be caused by the configuration of Sonicwall TZ 170. I suggest bypassing Sonicwall TZ 170, or you can restart this router for test. And please turn off the security settings on it, also close firewall on Windows 7. If the issue persists, please follow these steps for configure incoming VPN connection on Windows 7: 1 Click “Start” 2 Input “Control Panel” in Search Box and press enter 3 Go to “network and sharing center” 4 Click “Change adapter settings” on the left pane 5 Press Alt+F and select New Incoming connection 6 Put a check on who you’d like to give access to this computer or you can configure a new account by clicking on “Add someone”, then click on Next. 7 Put a check mark on Through the Internet. Click on Next. 8 Select the protocols you want to enable for this connection. Click on Allow access 9 Make a note of the Computer name as this will be used by the client to connect to this computer and after that Click on Close. Then set VPN connection on their Windows XP PC, more detail steps you can refer: http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/Configure-VPN-Connection-Windows-XP.html Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. I have setup those exact settings on his work computer (Windows 7). I will double-check them. Also, I have a new laptop with Windows 7 at home and I have not experienced a problem connecting to my XP laptop at work or the servers at work. I'm pretty sure that this is a setting within Windows 7 i.e. host machine. I will double-check the firewall settings as well. Thank you, Sean Couse

Just to wrap this thread up... The final answer on what worked. Turned off all firewalls on the new Windows 7 computer and connected to it using the computer name. IP address would not resolve.
