Windows XP Networking Problem
I have two computers, which I have named System A and System B and I cannot get them to conneect for file and printer sharing. They both use the PC Chips A13G+ V3.0A Micro ATX board with an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+. I use the USB Up-Dock Model UH510 docking station built by QVS for the LAN port to connect to a DSL modem and for the USB hub. To connect System A and System B I use the U.S. Robotics Model 7905 5-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch. All the hardware seems to be working all right. The operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 with Service Pack 3, No. 76477-OEM-0015717-31545. I have tried enabling the NetBIOS over TCP/IP, making sure the computer browser service is started, running the network setup wizard over and over again, and some other actions. I have not had any success. I am or was able to connect with the Internet with either computer.A problem with System A is that on bootup I get the message "EAccess Violation" from the RealTek sound application. The sound is working all right. Regards Peter Dooling1 person needs an answerI do too

HiDo you have a Routing system? Are you sure that you Not are connected with the computer directly to the Internet? If you do not have a private LAN (the 192.168.xx.xx IP type) you can Not Share.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/wired.mspxJack, MVP-Networking. WWW.EZLAN.NET

Jack:Does it have to be specifically a routing system? I do have a U.S. Robotics Model 7905 5-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch to which System A, System B, and the DSL modem are connected by means of LAN cables. In a previous setup only Systems A and B were connected to the ethernet switch. The USB Up-Dock Model UH510 docking station was connected to System A by means of a USB cable and to the DSL modem by means of a LAN cable. I just reconfigured all LAN network connections to the 192.168.xx.xx IP addresses. The icons for the LAN network connections show images of locked padlocks. What do the locked padlocks mean? All LAN connections indicate that they are connected. Regards Peter Dooling

HiTypical Internet connection with Home Network looks like this.http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpgIf you notice there is No USB involvement in the Network per-se. I do not fully understand your USB concoction. Years ago some ISPs use to give DSL Modems that have only USB connection. They do not do it any more (at least Not in the US). If your Modem is a USB only Modem, you have to get a regular DSL Ethernet Modem.Assuming that your DSL Modem is a modem only and Not a Modem/Router combo, and that it has an Ethernet port, then a Router like this will work well.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320023&cm_re=asus_wireless_router-_-33-320-023-_-Product Jack, MVP-Networking. Jack:I have recently purchased the Asus WL-520GU wireless router, which, I understand, you pointed out and can be used with wired and wireless connections. I have two computers, which I have named System A and System B. They both use the PC Chips A13G+ V3.0A Micro ATX board with an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 4400. The operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 with Service Pack 3, No. 76477-OEM-0015717-31545.I was able to connect System A with the router. However I cannot connect System B with the router. I have tried enabling the NetBIOS over TCP/IP, making sure the DHCP service is started. I have not had any success. When I try to configure the LAN IP address of System B automatically IP Address 169.254.197.182 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0 are always assigned, indicating that the DHCP may not be working. When I try to configure it manually I cannot find an IP address that will work. In System A, on the other hand, the IP address of 192.168.1.2 and the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 are assigned when the LAN IPaddress is configured automatically. The IP address and the subnet mask of the router are, as the instruction manual says, 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0 respectively. These will connect. Regards, Peter Dooling

HiSomething is blocking the second computer from getting IP.Compare the Network settings of the two computers, they should be the same. Maybe the Security (Firewall) blocks the "Bad" computer's connection to the Router (check the network cable too).Try to configure the second computer to static IP.Configre it to 192.168.1.200 mask 255.255.255.0.Gateway and DNS 192.168.1.1--------------------------In general. On 169.xx.xx.xxPart of a Wireless cable/DSL Router is a DHCP Server. The server assigns IP address to the Network computers that are configured to Auto Obtain IP address. If for some reason the computer cannot connect to the Router, it cannot obtain an IP and Windows assign a default IP 169.xxx.xxxx.xxx. This IP is Not functional IP for regular Internet and network purposes. What to look for?Make sure that there is a good cable between the computer and the Router, and that the cable is plugged well all the way in.---------------------------Make sure that the computer as a valid Network card and the TCP/IP is configured correctly.Check the Device Manager for valid Wire card entry.http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_dm.jpgIf there is No valid entry, delete any Bogus Entry, and re-install the Wire card's Drivers.Check the Network connections to make sure that you have a Local Area Connection Icon/Entry, and that the Properties of the Icon (right click on the Icon) are correctly configured with TCP/IPv4 protocol in the Network Connections Properties.http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_connection_tcp.jpgLog to the Router's menu from a working computer and make sure that the DHCP is On and it is configured to assign IPs that can cover the number of computer that are connected (few more will be even better). If you made any changes, Switch Off the computers and the Router, Reboot the Router, and the computers.Right click on the Wire card Network Connection, choose Status, Details, and see if it got an IP and the rest of the settings.-----------------------------Software Firewall application that is Not configured to allow local traffic (between the computer and the Router is a possible issue too. Some 3rd parties Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even if they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, or totally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .----------------OK, I got rid of the Security suit, and it is working. How should I secure my system now?Read my post here,http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/0c186fb3-19c2-44a6-a147-8ce1661c1e02-----------------------------No Dice?Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run a Command Prompt as an Administrator. Allow elevation.Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt , and then press the Enter key.Restart the computer.Do the same process for refreshing the TCP/IP; just replace the typed command with.netsh int ip reset Do the same to Flash the old DNS Data type in,ipconfig /flushdns Reboot the computer.----------------Still No Dice? Hmm... thinking. (-_-;) Jack-MVP Windows Networking. WWW.EZLAN.NET

One more thing to check is that the DHCP Service is running on your computer:Start->Run->"services.msc"Then locate the line that begins with "DHCP Client"Verify that its status is "Started" and its Startup Type is "Automatic"If not, double-click on it and make it so.HTH, JW

I am using the same McAfee virus protection software on both computers and I did not see anything suspicious as regards blocking network or internet access.I do not understand the part about typing Cmd in the Start Search text box. I could find only a Search dialog box to search for files. I was only able to access the regular Command Prompt and thenetsh int ip reset command did not work. I got error messages after I typed and entered it. The operating system I am using is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.Incidentally I plugged a USB to LAN converter into System B and connected this LAN to the router. I was then able to connect System B to the router and access the internet. This suggests that the problem may be localized with the onboard LAN in System B Regards, Peter Dooling
