Windows XP File Manager (Explorer?) shuts down when hovering over some of My Pictures photos. Might be movie (MOV) files or other motion sequences that are inside some of the various folders. The problem is sometimes caused by a third-party extension. ShellExView can be useful to see which shell extensions have been introduced into Explorer. Read about it then scroll down near to the bottom to download the x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html When you run it, click on the column labelled Company to alphabetically sequence the entries. Let us assume that the Microsoft entries are bona fide and concentrate on the others. Is there anything else listed that is either unnecessary or unknown? If so, highlight it and click the red spot (top left) to disable it. You may find it easier to disable them all, then re-enable them (green spot) one at a time and try Explorer until the culprit is found.

Thqanks for your suggestion which led me to what seems to be the answer. This is to do with a security scheme called Data Execution Prevention. By going START>ControlPanel>System>Advanced Tab>Performance Settings>DEP ......... ......... it is then possible to turn off WINDOWS EXPLORER from the scheme (tic box) and APPLY. This seems to cure the problem of my photos causing the Win EXP to keep shutting down. Obviously I hope that it will not store up problems for the future as this is a security add-on that is in addition to the normal Firewall & Anti-virus/anti malware package. If you have any advice in this regard I would be glad of it. Meanwhile I thank you for your trouble. Beresford

I'm pleased that you have 'apparently' sorted it out. Thank you for posting back.
