Windows XP: USB mouse and keyboard stopped working
After one of the Microsoft Windows updates my USB mouse (Logitech) and keyboard (Dell) stopped working. They are working before login screen and working if I boot from Symantec boot disk. But I cannot login at all because I cannot go through the login screen. Been looking ovet the net for a week - tried some suggested solutions (like add another USB PCI, etc.) - nothing working. I can use keyboard in BIOS settings (all USB legacy is enabled). Computer - Dell Dimension E520, XP pro. And I do not have PS/2 ports unfortunately. Not sure it will work if I will add PCI with PS/2 ports...PLEASE HELP!!!3 people need an answerI do too

It's a little rough maneuvering with a keyboard, but it can be done. Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Put a check mark in the box Show Updates (tab to it and press the space bar), then sort by Date Last Used.If that doesn't fix it, then you can try a System Restore to a date before the problem started. That would be easier from Safe Mode with Command Prompt. How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449SC TomEdit: I'm sorry, I forgot the keyboard doesn't work. How about in safe mode? Do the mouse and/or keyboard work then?

Printer and external drive are not active until Windows completely loaded, so unplugging doing nothingThe drive and printer are still drawing current from the USB whether Windows is running or not.If the keyboard works in Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt, you can CD %systemroot%\system32\restore and run rstrui.exe and try a System Restore to a time before this happened.SC Tom

Let us know how the restore goes.SC Tom

I can get access to the system to reboot and do regular maintenance but, I'm only given a hour or so to do that. My concern is there might be something else wrong with the OS. The PC is part of an operation control system, and with a workaround, is not urgent enough to take down for a couple days to reinstall windows and the control software etc. I'm not sure when the problem started because we use a special serial keyboard 99% of the time.As in the original post, USB HID devices work in BIOS and other boot media, but, not in windows. If a PS2 keyboard is plugged in, and I log in, I get to a window to install the keyboard and mouse as HID devices, standard MS drivers, and they work for that windows session only. If I reboot or change USB ports I have to reinstall the driver. You would be better off starting your own new thread than hijacking an existing one.SC Tom

I know it's a little late, but I have recently ran into the same problem and I was reading here hoping to find an answer. I have solved my problem and I was hoping to post what i did in hopes it would help someone here in the future.Windows loads drivers in a specific order, sometimes that order gets mixed up for whatever reason (haven't figured that part out yet). obviously mouse and keyboard would be first. But *things* happen. What I did was I unplugged the mouse and left only the keyboard, monitor, and power cord connected to the machine; then I booted the machine. The keyboard loaded. I then plugged in the mouse (USB) and used the keyboard to go through the "New Hardware" installation wizard.I hope this helps someone.Take it easy, and remember:Don't get mad at the computers, They only do what we tell them to. Hmmm. I am experiencing a similar problem on my XP machine. Here's what happened...I unplugged all peripherals and USB keyboard and USB mouse in order to move to another desk. I then reattached all items, then booted my machine. Mouse and keyboard not responding, so I cannot log in to resolve matter. Attempted in safe mode with no success. My mouse and keyboard are of Microsoft manufacture and are wireless. Unsuccessful despite anything that I attempt. Any ideas?

I had the same problem but I was dual booting Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 on separate hard drives. I updated my Intel chipset drivers and now my mouse and keyboard are working fine.My mouse and keyboard worked fine in windows 7 btw.
