Windows XP: USB mouse and keyboard stopped working
After one of the Microsoft Windows updates my USB mouse (Logitech) and keyboard (Dell) stopped working. They are working before login screen and working if I boot from Symantec boot disk. But I cannot login at all because I cannot go through the login screen. Been looking ovet the net for a week - tried some suggested solutions (like add another USB PCI, etc.) - nothing working. I can use keyboard in BIOS settings (all USB legacy is enabled). Computer - Dell Dimension E520, XP pro. And I do not have PS/2 ports unfortunately. Not sure it will work if I will add PCI with PS/2 ports...PLEASE HELP!!!2 people need an answerI do too

It's a little rough maneuvering with a keyboard, but it can be done. Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Put a check mark in the box Show Updates (tab to it and press the space bar), then sort by Date Last Used.If that doesn't fix it, then you can try a System Restore to a date before the problem started. That would be easier from Safe Mode with Command Prompt. How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449SC TomEdit: I'm sorry, I forgot the keyboard doesn't work. How about in safe mode? Do the mouse and/or keyboard work then?

Are you able to access the Desktop or it sit there on the log on screen? If you can't log into your Desktop then I think the updates weren't installed correctly or an incomplete install of the Updates took place, hence things gone wrong. TryLast Known Configuration That worked and see if you can log on. If you can't try to accessSafe Mode and Perform a System Restore and this time give the updates time to install and monitor the installation by installing them manually or InAdvance Mode instead of Express Mode. nass -- http://www.nasstec.co.uk

I already tried ultimate boot CD but tools there will not help - I can boot, mouse and keyboard working but tools there will not find any problems - I have analysed boot.ini, etc. and there is no problems. I believe the problem is that system is not activating or rather deactivating USB before login screen until Windows is loaded (which is not happening without login). Why is that happening? How Knoppix can help me I cannot understand....

Done all of this with no effect I eve added PCI with USB and BIOS recognised it but still it not working. There is clear sign that light on keyboard goes down when windows start to load...I an just praying that PCI with PS/2 will work...

Done all of this with no effectDid you changed the Keyboard, just in case the Keyboard defective?Did you run the diagnostic tools and run a full test?try to swap port for KB and mouse and see which will detect the KB and Mouse. It is the only option is testing the USB port by swapping the KB and mouse each time and test.If you tried Knoppix LIVE CD, does the KB and mouse work?Just I want you to make sure the operating system is okay, or you can repair/install the operating system as the last solution for your issue. You need to back up your data first by hooking up the HDD to another (NT) working machine. nass -- http://www.nasstec.co.uk

The only image backup which have working mouse and keyboard is month old and this is the last possibility I have if anything else will not help. This is another confirmation that hardware is Ok and problem is with Windows. Actually if I restore to this image Windows will suggest immediately to install 2 updates (XP security and malicious removal tool) - if I install the last one mouse and keyboard will stop working

Thanks - I have an option to select what to install. Regarding Dell - they are not supporting this model any more - the last updates dated to 2007 unfortunately and I have all drivers they suggested... I still want to wait until I will have PS/2 PCI - based on my web searches this can be solution for the problem. If it will not work - I will go for this 1 month old backup...

I'm having the same issue, however a reinstall of the OS isn't possible bacause we can use a PS2 keyboard as a workaround. I can get access to the system to reboot and do regular maintenance but, I'm only given a hour or so to do that. My concern is there might be something else wrong with the OS. The PC is part of an operation control system, and with a workaround, is not urgent enough to take down for a couple days to reinstall windows and the control software etc. I'm not sure when the problem started because we use a special serial keyboard 99% of the time.As in the original post, USB HID devices work in BIOS and other boot media, but, not in windows. If a PS2 keyboard is plugged in, and I log in, I get to a window to install the keyboard and mouse as HID devices, standard MS drivers, and they work for that windows session only. If I reboot or change USB ports I have to reinstall the driver.
