Windows XP/7/Server hangs during video/game play
Let me start with a description of the problem. I recently upgraded my computer with some new hardware. Now, when I play a video file, or try to play a game on my PC, Windows will stop responding. No mouse or keyboard input works at all. Some specific instances are: I tried to play a .avi video file. Windows will hang and the video will freeze, not accepting any input. Through several tries, I got the file to play for about 2 minutes, and then it froze, and I hear a low pitched buzzing from my speakers. I have tried this with multiple formats, always the same issue. When I try to play a video game, the same issue will happen. Specifically, with Everquest 2 and Half-Life 2 (through steam), I can't even get into the game, as the PC will freeze on the title screen. I have duplicated this problem across 3 operating systems. I started with Windows Server 2008 R2, then moved to an installation of Windows 7 RC, and then to Windows XP Home. All operating systems were fully updated through Windows Update, so I am thinking this may be a hardware issue. I have checked all chipset and device drivers to make sure they are all the latest stable builds. I know that my bios is not the latest revision, but with this hanging issue, I am a bit hesitant to try a flash, as I don't want to brick the motherboard. I attempted to install Windows 7 Professional, hoping that my issue might disappear, but the install would go to a black screen during the 'Completing Installation' step, sit there for a few minutes, and then kick out a bsod, and reboot. The message on the bsod read "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE", reinforcing my thought that this was a hardware issue. Since then, I have deleted all partitions on the drive, formatted the drive, and re-installed Windows XP. The system runs fine, unless I play a video or a game. I am at my wits end here, please help! The new system specs are as follows: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 MB: MSI 790FX-GD70 GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT RAM: GSkill DDR3 4GB(2x2) HD: Samsung SATA 250GB / Samsung SATA 1TB PS: 550W Power Supply 1 person needs an answerI do too

My friend I do beleve i can help you out with 10 trill other people all over the world.I see you have a directx 10.1 card. Did you know windows 7 is directx 11? Didn't think so hardly anyone pays this any attention. Cause the is my pc compatabile test most people do before buying it says there system is and never says there video cards aint.Go to start then run type in dxdiag then enter. Look at the directx driver on that it will say 11 and your card cant do it with out green, black, blue screen of death hang windows explorer and many other issues this will cause like kernal mode failure. I recomend you get a Geforce 400 or better they support 11 and cant rem which ati support it but you need a 11 direct x video card.

Kilty, read the 'README.txt File'.....of your games. There certainly will be some reference to the TYPE of Graphics card you are using.........to have compatibility issues!Whenever you are thinking of, or doing any level of Upgrading your computer's hardware..........CHECK OUT what will work with those games 1st!, then, buy what does work.Best clue here, is, what is the 'recommended Graphics card'.......that is IDEALLY suited for your computer's motherboard? And Operating System? And those games?
