Windows XP, freezing at log on screen.
I have a Dell Dimensions 4700 running Windows XP Home Edition. As of late, the system has started freezing up, sometimes while I'm on the Internet, but here lately it won't let me pass the logon screen at start up. Any suggestions would be helpful. I will say that the problem seemed to begin, either with the latest critical updates from Microsoft or when my Spyware Detector updated to it's newest version Max Spyware Detertor. Tried uninstalling the updates, but they downloaded and reinstalled before I had a chance to see if they were causing a problem. Also, did a restore point, back before both were installed and system ran okay, but again both reinstalled themselves. Waiting patiently for any ideas. Thanks in advance.1 person got this answerI do too

Hello Oz1956
If you suspect one of these updates was to blame we will have to find out.
Can you get into Safe Mode? Press F8 repeatedly whenever bootup starts and boot all the way into Safe Mode
First of all disable Automatic Updates so it cannot install them again
Right click My Computer/Properties/Automatic Updates
Turn it off completely here.
Then disable Spyware Detector Updater.
I think you will find it in msconfig
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK
Startup Tab
Look for it here and disable the Updater, not the program itself. The entry should say Updater.
Then run System Restore to before these Updates again and see if the problem is fixed
If all is well turn Automatic Updates on again and let it install the Updates. See what happens then. If system is still Ok turn Spyware Detector Updater on again by er-checking the box.
This will tell you if one of them is to blame.
