Windows Vista to Windows 7 Easy Transfer Problem
I recently got a new laptop and I tried to use windows easy file transfer to move all of my files from my old laptop (old runs Vista, new is Windows 7). I tried to use my network to transfer the files so Windows Transfer on my old laptop gave me a key to type in on my new laptop. When I typed it in (it was definitely correct) my old laptop displayed the error message that I was logged in as a temporary profile and I should restart my computer. After two tries the error message still gets displayed. There is only one account on each laptop, and I have no idea what a temporary profile is.

How is your network setup? Is this your work domain setup or a home network? here is someone named Phillip who had a similar problem to yoursSame problem - running Win7RC, I'm preparing to migrate to the production version.I think the problem is that the error message is misleading. I created a new account and still saw the message ''You're currently logged on using a temporary profile. Restart your computer and try again.''On checking with Regedit, I found that there was an entry in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList for a temporary profile that had been created some time back. See KB947215 and KB947242. It then dawned on me that EasyTransfer will not want to run if there are _any_ temporary profiles in use as this might result in lost data. Removing the ProfileList key with the .bak suffix enabled Easy Transfer to run.If you find a key with a .bak suffix, check the ProfileImagePath subkey and make sure you have a backup copy of everything within that path unless it is in your "temp" path. I hope this helps someone.Philipand here's where a Microsoft employee made a suggestion in another thread I’m assuming when you turn your computer on, you select your profile and after selecting the profile you get that message, correct? What is the exact message? One thing we can try is to create a new profile and see if you can log in under that account. · Click the Start Orb then click Control Panel. · Click Classic View in left panel. · Double-click User Accounts. · Click Manage another user account. · Click Create a new account, and type the name (whatever you want for a name) · Choose account type as Computer administrator. · Click Create Account. · Log off and log on with the new account. Can you log on without that message? I do not mean to scare you but I would suggest backing up your data as soon as you can because you might not be able to log in later on. Please let us know. Hi, As your issue, you can refer to this thread.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/c7ce17c4-0464-4d95-868c-7d0a5fa8e3a5In my opinion, as your main concern is moving your files from your old laptop to your new laptop, while the Easy Transfer just can help you transfter personal files, e-mail, data, files, media, and settings from your old computer to the new one, I suggest you to use the backup feature in the Vista, in that case, you can restore the backup files in the Windows 7 with the backup. I hope this can help you. John
