Windows Vista flatlines
I was using vista x64 and running Kaspesky Internet Security 2012. All windows updates were done and my virus definitions were up to date. Kaspersky was starting scheduled scans but not actually scanning anything without manually stopping and restarting the scan. things got progressively worse as i was working through their instructions to fix the problems to where running a full scan would flatline vista without warning. eventually just attempting to do anything once windows starts kills vista. i have tried windows system restore, but restoring to an earlier date fails. starting in safe mode with networking, booting from the vista dics to repair windows isnt working. i used the hp diagnostic tools dics and successfully tested all of the hardware. there are no hardware problems detected. windows will boot at times but as soon as it starts it shuts the computer off instantaneously. other times it will say that windows failed to start and it recommends repairing windows in the windows error recovery. it says it will test windows and attempt to replace missing or corrupt files but it dies before it can detect any problems. i let windows check the c: disk and it successfully tested all 3 parts and said several SCHEMA files were orphaned. the files had .dat, .log, .bmp extensions. does anyone know what these files are or what it means that they were identified as orphaned? can anyone tell me how to fix/ repair/ restore my computer without having the drive wiped and reformatted? Please help.
