Windows Vista VPN
I just had a new Dell laptop (inspiron 640m) with Windows Vista installed on it. I set up a Windows VPN connection to access my work network and as soon as I connect through the VPN, my connection is authenticated, however, after a few minutes it disconnects by itself...any idea what I can do to resolve this?

Please collect RAS traces and send. Do the following to collect the traces: 1. Open elevated command prompt in Vista machine (right click cmd.exe and "Run as administrator") 2. netsh ras set tracing * enabled 3. Replicate the problem. 4. netsh ras set tracing * disabled 5. The logs will be located at %windir%\tracing folder. 6. Send us the logs. Thanks, Vamsi.

Tried the update - didn't help Have one PC that I upgraded from XP to Vista and VPN works. Have another PC that I installed Vista fresh and cannot sustain a VPN connection. Connects, registers on the network, and then disconnects. Occassionally it will remain connected for a few minutes during which time I can ping the remote network. Have another PC, a MACPRO, running Vista x64, and get the same results. Have another PC in the office that I retained as an XP machine and the VPN is solid. Googled everything but no solution. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Error #829 means "Modem disconnected due to link failure". Since you are able to connect successfully from your other computers i cannot accurately point out the reason. It would really help if you could send me the following logs. THiswill enable us to find the exact cause of the issue. RAS Logs The logs need to be collected before you start the connection setupExecute the following from elevated command prompt netsh ras set tr * enThis enableslogging <recreate the issue> - setup the connection and let it stay uptill it disconnects automatically netsh ras set tr * diThis disables logging This will generate log files in the %windir%\tracing directory. Please zip the files and send them to meat aanandr@microsoft.com thanks Aanand

I finally have had some success. I changed my VPN setting to require data encryption and everything is working. I noticed in the event log the following: VpnStrategy = PPTP then L2TP DataEncryption = Require which differs from when I didnt require encryption. Apparently my server requires encryption (I am assuming dont know). Previously when I had a L2TP connection it was always disconnecting. To recap, I have security - encryption required PPP settings - all UN-CHECKED Networking - IpSec - use certificate - verify name... is UN-Checked IpV6 is UN-Checked Defender & Firewall are turned off (Haven't tried turning them back on but will in the near future. I tried turning off the RAS Autodial service but it made no difference. I also have to make sure that I only have one VPN to my server at a time as it is configured to only allow one tunnel per login ID. Hope the above helps.

I had emailed my log trace last week and haven't heard back. I have tried all of the above with no luck except that it seems to do with my wrieless NIC. I have a wireless card in my XP machine here and all is well. I have connected and stayed connected on this Vista laptop via the LAN on the same wireless router and it works fine. Wirelessly, and it just drops in seconds! Its an HP notebook with an Intel 3945abg wireless NIC. System is up to date as per MU and HP. I don't know if this helps, but I set my wireless not to use SSID broadcast. This seems to cause a problem for the autodiscover/save feature in Vista. It detects the unnamed netowrk but it never saves it. It will save it each time with a new incremeting number, thus I always have to re-connect everytime I reboot or bring it online from sleep/hibernate. From hibernate, i usually have to disbale the nic and renable it get an IP. So, my suspicion is a flakey driver or something, but i know the zero config in XP didn't support the hidden SSID too well, which i think was to spec.

I had this also on my Vista laptop a half hour ago. I've solved this by restoring the state of the default services. On the site http://www.speedyvista.com/registry.htmlis a registry file with the deafult services or every Vista version.

Has anyone come up with a reason for what is causing this yet? I am getting this same thing on my new Vista Tablet PC. I would really rather not just set all of my services back to the default, I'd like to know what the problem is and be able to correct it. Thanks, Dan

I used these settings and I was very happy as I had the impression the problem was solved. But today I realised I'm still having random disconnects, especially when a file transfer is taking place.I am having the same problem. I am connecting to my university's VPN connection from my Windows Vista. Everything works fine, until I get a random disconnect after a while. Then, i can reconnect immediately. I don't know why this happens. Does anyone have more information on that? cas1 wrote: I finally have had some success. I changed my VPN setting to require data encryption and everything is working. Here's my twist to this VPN problem (runnig Vista Ultimate) VPN works fine with hard wired connection to my wireless router, but has the 'connect then disconnect' problem when going wireless. Wired - works, wireless - no.Error log has the Code 829 entry It use to work at home wirelessly, but not now. I am not aware of a change to my system or the server which would have made it stopped. Also, it had worked wirelessly at Starbucks. So I thought it was my Dlink 624 at home.I was going to try replacing it with a tried and true LinkSys tomorrow. ButI now sitting in a Panera (WiFi) and I am getting the same symptom. I will try Cas1's settings before I send this... Standby.. Didn't work for me. I had to change the setting to PPTP to get connected, But non-of the other changes seemed to make a difference. I will try a Starbucks in about an hour.

Update... I was digging around some other threads and someone hinted at a reboot. In my case I regularly go from my wired office to my wireless house. 99%I simply sleep my laptop for the quick ride home. Upom waking, the wireless WEB connection is fine, but the VPN connects then hangs up (see above). I'm still at the Panera, but a rebootted, and Voila, VPN is fine. I suppose there is a separate connection ID or parameters for my wired and wireless ports. It can handle multiple Web connections, but I think my VPN server interpreted my wireless VPN connection to be different that my wired connection. It would error out either because it only allows one connection per login ID, or my network maps (which of course were the same) confused the server and it kicked me out, Hope this helps

Should I reactivate this thread or is there another thread I should use? I've been having this same problem for a long time. I've always been able to reboot to fix it. It is coming up again and rebooting does not help. I've created a set of logs as listed above. Please help.

I have the same problem on a Dell laptop with Vista Ultimate. The termination reason code is always 829, andVista usuallydrops the VPN connectionafter five minutes. SometimesVista holds the connection a bit longer but it always drops and always for the same reason. None of the recommendations on this thread have helped.I made aVPNconnection using a Delldesktop running XP(using the same network as the laptop), and the connection was solid. It held for hours.Hopefully someone from Microsoft takes note of this thread and offers some help.

At some point since my post in July, I applied a few Windows Updates that I was behind on. Since then, I don't think I have had the problem.
