Windows Vista PCs unable to communicate outside subnet
Hello,we have a strange problem in one of our networks. The subnet is a /24, and all Windows XP PCs can work just fine with a mask of /24.All Windows Vista PCs are unable to communicate outside the subnet, unless the subnet mask is broadened to /16 on these PCs.This affects both DHCP clients and Vista PCs with a static IP.The Vista clients work perfectly fine in other sites/subnets.I can provide routing tables (working vs not working) that illustrate the problem. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, Thank you for posting. Given the current situation, could you please post your routing tables? In addition, please also post the ipconfig /all results of Windows Vista and Windows XP computers. Thanks.

Hi,thanks for your response, this is the data I gathered so far:These are the routing tables: 1) IP address obtained via DHCP, netmask set to 255.255.255.0 (which works for the XP PCs):===========================================================================Interface List14 ...00 ff 68 bd 2c 87 ...... Hi Holger, Thank you for your update. Could you please offer more information? 1. Did you install or modify any network device before? 2. Modifying netmask is not a normal troubleshooting steps, did you encounter similar issue before? 3. If you are using Configuration Website to manage router, could you please get a screenshot of IP Configuration web page? In addition, if possible, I suggest enabling Netmon on both machines to capture the network packets for further research: 1) Download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1.3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab 4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.Note: Please start NetMon on both machines. 6) On both computers, please disable and enable the network connection. 7) Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon. 8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the following space: https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=55d98768-20b8-4699-9d61-92c86c07cac3 Password: F#%s-8p*8C In addition, please understand that analyze/troubleshoot this kind of issue may be time consuming. If it is urgent, Id like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service for instant assistance. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the website listed below:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS Thank you for your cooperation. Hope it helps.

Hi,thanks a lot for the troubleshooting guidance, we will procced per your suggestion.regarding your questions: 1. Did you install or modify any network device before? we did change the DHCP server before, but that had no negative impact on all other sites relying onthat server (including VISTA clients). In addition to that, the problem can be reproduced by assigning a static IP address/mask (which should rule out DHCP) 2. Modifying netmask is not a normal troubleshooting steps, did you encounter similar issue before? this is the first time we have faced this issue 3. If you are using Configuration Website to manage router, could you please get a screenshot of IP Configuration web page? the router is a full blown Cisco site router that is managed by a third party, its configuration has not changed. The third-party provider is looking into this issue as well but with limited success so farI can probably prove the router model if required

Hi,I have used the network traffic apture files to analyze what is going on, and I found to devices responding to an ARP request for the default gateway address. As it turned out, somebody has plugged in an additional router-like device on the network, and the VISTA clients picked it up somehow (whereas the XP clients were to stupid/stubborn to be impacted)The nasty part was, the rogue router had a valid IP address (picked up via DHCP), it just responded to the ARP broadcasts when it should not. This thread can be closed I guess, the relevance of the problem to Vista is just the fact that Vista clients seem to be more flexible to pick up infrastructure devices (like routers) in their network neighborhood. Thanks for all your help! The advise to trace the traffic finally lead to the culprit.
