Windows Vista Install Error 1618
I tried to install a program such as iTunes or VLC Media program or any other program and the error message 1618 was displayed saying that another installation is in progress, please finish this installation before attempting this one again...So I checked task manager and there were no other installations in progress. I tried restarting my computer and still it displays the same message (and there's only one installation, (the one I'm attempting to Install) in progress.)What Should I do?

Hi, This issue may be caused by a corrupt registry key or system file. We can try to take the following suggestions to troubleshoot this issue. Suggestion 1: Rename Windows Installer InProgress file ====================================== 1. Click Start, type regedit in search bar, and then press Enter. 2. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress . 3. Click the InProgress subkey and note the name of the file listed on the right side for the database path. This file should have a .msi or .ipi extension. 4. Rename InProgress to OldProgress . 5. Close Registry Editor. 6. Locate the C:\Windows\Installer folder. 7. Rename the file listed in step 3. 8. Restart the computer, and then try the installation again. NOTE: If the InProgress subkey is not exist, please let me know. Suggestion 2: Unregister/ reregister Windows Installer ====================================== 1. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: cmd, and right-click cmd. 2. Click Run as administrator. 3. Please run following commands one by one. msiexec /unreg msiexec /regserver In addition, you also can try to install the latest Windows Installer 4.5 to troubleshoot this issue. Windows Installer 4.5 is available http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288/en-us If you didnt install SP1, it is recommended to install it first. It will install the latest Windows Vista components and system files, which may fix the Windows Installer issue and potential issues. Hope it helps.

Hi, Thank you for your update. Given the current stage, lets take the following steps to continue troubleshooting this issue. Suggestion 1: Test issue in Clean Boot ============================= 1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Restart the computer and test the issue. Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK". Please monitor the system in the Clean Boot environment. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Suggestion 2: Check the Windows Installer service ====================================== 1. Click "Start", input "services.msc" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". 2. Double click the Windows Installer service. 3. Please try to stop and start the service. If you receive any error message when trying to check Windows Installer service, please let me know. If the issue still persists, I suggest you enable Windows Installer log and reproduce this problem. How to Interpret Windows Installer Logs http://blogs.technet.com/richard_macdonald/archive/2007/04/02/How-to-Interpret-Windows-Installer-Logs.aspx Then, please upload the log file to the following link: https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=d08ec315-f359-4877-80a7-87f14de49763 Password: eQ$NASzmUp I will take a further research after I get the file. Thanks.

I've had the same issue with all of my recent install attempts... Someone said it could be a Vista problem, but I don't know. I'm upgrading to Windows 7 soon so we'll see if that solves it. I'll update this if it does work, within a week.
