Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Network Connectivity

I am running a desktop computer with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have DSL home service from AT&T that has been rock-solid reliable. I also have my own modem and wireless router, and regularly use the router with a laptop running windows XP without issue to connect to the internet.
An odd problem began to occur with the Vista desktop about a week ago. It suddenly lost connectivity to the internet - or seemed to - so I tried a reboot, and even though everything seemed back to normal, and the network connectivity programs all said I had a valid internet connection, I could not browse the internet with any browser, or use any other program to connect to the internet. I went through all the recommended troubleshooting steps, and finally, when I thought it was hopeless, I redid my internet connection from scratch and was again able to browse the internet - HOWEVER - only with 64-bit browsers! IE8 and Firefox 64-bit work fine, 32-bit browsers do not. Pinging websites from a command prompt fail - but Windows Vista troubleshooting says my connection is fine.
At this point, I can only browse the internet using 64-bit browsers. I cannot connect to microsoft for downloads or updates, I cannot use any program which connects to the internet outside the browsers, and, of course, several websites don't work in 64-bit browsers because they use Flash, so they won't work for me as well.
It is very important I fix this problem soon. I use turbo-tax to do my taxes, and it won't connect to the internet with my computer in this current state.
