Windows Vista DHCP problem.
Hello, i work at an ISP thru cable modemand we have been having some problems with Windows Vista and DHCP renew . When Vista computers try to renew DHCP it gives a time out and starts with apipa address. As well the Windows Vista computers starts the DHCP process sonner that is supost. We believe that the problem could be introduction of IPv6 natively. We already saw: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233how ever this is not a reasonable answer for us to provideto our clients. We also check http://help.aol.co.uk/will-my-cable-modem-work-with/article/20070118073209990009?n=collection&p=AOL%209.0%20VR%20(Vista%20Ready)%20help_portal&c=help_portalbut this is a very extreme position on whitch our companie do not want to follow, or at least is trying not to follow. Hi, I am sorry but the only workaround is to disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista if the DHCP Server does not support DHCP BROADCAST flag. I understand that it may be time consuming to upgrade the product. In the long term, however, I recommend that you upgrade the firmware of the product to let it supports DHCP BROADCAST flag. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Thanks for the answer, but as you can imagine that is not a valid response to +/-20.000 Microsoft Windows Users whitch are starting to migrate to Windows Vista. Now.... we may possably create a fix to our clients to run in order to create the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\ { GUID } = 1, in the regedit but this is not a very good thing for us to do, does Microsoft already have this fix? If not... is it possible for you guys to create and publish? Best Regards. Afonso Bonifcio MCP ID# 3426407

Hi, I fully understand the inconvenience the issue has caused and that the current situation can be frustrating. However, please understand that this is a change by design but not a bug, and this is the reason why we published the KB 928233 to our customer. As a result, I recommend that you upgrade the firmware of the product so as to make it support DHCP Broadcast flag. If the upgrade is not available, using a script to help the client computers adjust the registry value should still be the best workaround at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
