I have a Winows Vista laptop that has no Admistrator user enabled. I have tried the following: 1. Tried to open add/edit/remove users from Control Panel Result: Popup "Please type in the administrator's password and click OK" but, OK button is greyed out (unavailable). 2. Used 'Net user %COMPUTETRNAME\Administrator set:Enable Result: Error 5. Access Denied. 3. Started the computer in safe mode Result: 2 Users availbale; both have 'Standard User' rights 4. Restarted the computer with Safe Mode with Command Prompt and ran 'Net user %COMPUTERNAME%\Administrator set:Enable'. Result: Error 5. Access Denied. What else should I try? Any input shall be very appreciated. Thank you.

You can't make an account an administrator unless you are an admin. So if you don't have an admin account there is nothing that can be done except reinstall Windows. The inbuilt administrator account may appear on the logon screen in safe mode. PS your syntax for the Net command is wrong. Net user Administrator /active:yes is correct. David, I agree; my syntax which I posted was wrong. Although, I had the problem aftetr I corrected the syntax. Any other suggestions?

Windows is a secure operating system. David, Doesn't Windows have a back door? I from the TechNet documentation, I read that the OS must have an Administrator account. I imagine Microsoft should have an error popup enabled one the Administrators group was empty. Apparently, in Vista, they do not. I know they have it enabled it on Windows 7 since I tried to replicate the problem on a VM. Hence, they may have an alternate bailout situation.

The only bailout is starting in safe mode where the inbuilt administrator account should appear. It doesn't for you.
