Windows Vista & Windows 7 on Windows 2003 server - will not stay connected - apparent DNS problem
Setup: I have a multihomed computer setup Connection1: wireless for internet access DHCP nothing defined in the TCP/IP properties windows (this connection works fine) Connection2: Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit... DNS server defined as 192.168.0.1 DHCP enabled I used to have Vista installed - it worked fine for 2 years then around thanskgiving 2009 the LAN connection2 became intermittently connected. I could not transfer large files because they timeout, could not reliably stay connected to the LAN. I upgraded to Windows 7 this Jan 2010 and still no luck in fact it's worse, now it will sometimes connect after bootup and quickly lose connection. I have Windows Firewall, Norton Firewall, Windows Defender all disabled Diagnose Log Results: The Network Diagnostics Framework has completed the diagnosis phase of operation. The following repair option was offered: Helper Class Name: TransportConnection Root Cause: The remote device or resource won't accept the connection The device or resource (MYNETDOMAIN) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)". Root Cause Guid: {91209b3b-0ce4-47fb-9d81-7e6162977ea3} Repair option: Contact your network administrator The computer or device you are trying to reach is available, but it doesn’t support what you’re trying to do. This might be a configuration issue or a limitation of the device. Event viewer log results: The client was unable to validate the following as active DNS server(s) that can service this client. The server(s) may be temporarily unavailable, or may be incorrectly configured. 192.168.0.1 Name resolution for the name MYNETDOMAIN timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Current registry settings (Note I am unable to change to a DOMAIN name so it is currently a WORKGROUP): Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 Any fix to this? I have the same problem and am looking for a fix. thanks, -Halashus Connection1: wireless for internet access DHCP nothing defined in the TCP/IP properties windows (this connection works fine) Connection2: Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit... --- Wireless connection works fine? 2 questions: What are you wirelessly connected to that works 'fine' and on #2, you have a dns server defined and dhcpd enabled, what you are not saying is what you are trying to connect TO on the local lan? Another Windows machine? Some home server thing (home built or retail /commercial network appliance/app/file server?)... It might be win7 requiring 'sign-or-seal', on it's network connection and whatever you are speaking to doesn't want to (or can't) do either -- which, in my personal opinion, on a home network, with an internal network address is no big deal. But you want to check your local windows's local security policy options under your win7's Administrative tools, I have one called 'Security Configuration Management', but the window title says 'Local Security Policy' it's a MMC-form interface (like many admin interfaces to registry settings), with the top line saying 'Security Settings' Expand 'Local Policies then 'Security Options' Look at "Microsoft network (client/server)" options...like client is what is used when Win7 connects to something else, and server is used when something connects to your Win7 box.... Check the policies for 'Digitallly sign communication (always)', and 'Digitally sign communications (if server agrees)'. A compatible setting for these would be 'Disabled and Enabled' (respectively)...i.e. sign when server agrees... But it may be that default was changed in win7...(not sure/remembering). If you have some really broken network appliance, you might check the policy on 'send unencrypted password to 3rd party SMB servers' This should be Disabled, but if your appliance is really brain-dead, you might have to enable it to get it working--- Just be aware, .... ..well, you really should get familiar with 'wireshark'.... (wireshark.org). It can tell you want is being checked for on the network, and why it isn't going through.... Beyond that could be a bunch of things -- so look at the wireshark trace and see what's going on. Good luck! ... oh yeah, if you enable unencrypted passwords, then when you use wireshark, it will show you want the password and logins are in plaintext, when you (or anyone else -- which "shouldn't" be possible on a local non-routable network...(*cough*) (well, I think it unlikely anyway!)...) monitor your local network (with wireshark) running on your local computer. So it's not usually a good idea to have those enabled...and the shouldn't be necessary with any reasonably configured software...but hey...who knows what's out there...
