Windows Update problems and Missing Windows Files Error
A few weeks ago I received an update to upgrade me to the new McAfee Program provided as part of my AT&T Internet package. But each time I attempted to complete the download I received an error message that the update failed because there was a missing Windows file. McAfee support spent a lot of time, over two days, trying to help me resolve the problem to no avail. One of the issues we faced was that every time we tried to install the latest Windows updates, it appeared that the updates were installed, but when the computer was rebooted the updates had failed to install...and were still there waiting to be installed again. Several more attempts, no change. Ran Windows 'FIX-IT', but after it completes the scan it can find no problems.Went to Microsoft support for help, and followed the steps suggested to fix the problem: Sfc/scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of the system scan. Verification 7% compete. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. Findstr /c[SR] %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt Findstar is not recognized as an internal or external command. I made some changes to the spacing on the above address where it looked like it called for a full space, but that made no difference. I hope someone will be able to help me correct this problem so that I can complete the Windows updates, fix the missing Windows File issue, and run McAfee again. My computer has really slowed down, and goes into a short freeze-up mode much too often. Thanks!!!

1. This seems to be more on AV vendor's side. Please address the support forum here https://community.mcafee.com/community/home 2. Information "update failed because there was a missing Windows file" is not sufficient. Please give us more information on the specific name of this file. If the announcement is not specific look into Event logs and try to teke the information from here. 3. McAfee is known for issues and my advice is: a. If you want to to stick to it, remove old version and install the new copy. Update AV database every day. b. Install the newest version of MS installer. c. Try to install in more verbose mode. d. Consider Microsoft Security Essentials instead of McAfee (I have no issues now in W 7) Regards Milos

Hi Bonbo36, Firstly, please let us know whether other updates can be installed successfully. If others works properly, please provide us more detailed information about the update, such as its exact name or its KB Number. Meanwhile, I noticed that you typed command findstar instead of findstr. Therefore, please refer to How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 and directly copy the command from this article. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support
