Hi,I found this, translated from Russian and cleaned it up a bit...Try to do the following:Run and 'elevated' Command Prompt, type CMD into the Start Menu then right-click the result & 'Run as Administrator.1. Stop the automatic updates client component service (type net stop wuauserv in Command Prompt); 2. From explorer navigate to the C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder delete all files & folders; 3. Restart the automatic updates service (type net start wuauserv in Command Prompt); 4. Good thought. There have been reports of certain updates changing certain build strings. I'll try & dig them up. Ah, ok. I may be wrong then :pI still think an uninstall of the previous update may work. Oh, I must correct me. Digging a bit in my own WindowsUpdate Log (still using RC), it says: "WU client version 7.3.7100.0" and "OS Version = 6.1.7100.0.0.65792". So, it's not a question of a "build", seems to be an internal number, nothing else.Concerning the OP's problem, if Orbital Shark's suggestion doesn't work, you might check your network settings. Are you member of a domain? Maybe you have restricted access to updates due to policy settings? My RTM was acquired as a Technet subscriber and I have been using the Beta and RC for some time. This is a fresh install and activated using MS activation servers. This problem was re-creatable when loading certain 3rd party drivers which corrupted the windows update. I could re-create this from a plain vanilla install and then loading the 3rd party driver. I had to do a roll-back to get it working again. Finally I figured out manually which driver was causing the issue and did not install that one. Recently IBM released some newere beta drivers for testing with their hardware and it did the exact same thing and caused this failure of windows update. I did not want to do a roll-back because I thought I would try some of the other fixes like mentioned above and stopping the update service, deleting the .edb database as it might be corrupt, etc.. This only caused further deterioation of my OS install. I tried to do the MS Fix tool and repair the Windows update. Nothing worked. At that point I tried to do an in-place upgrade with the still boot Windows 7 install and the compatibility checker told me I had to remove my Turbo-Memory driver in order to do the in-place upgrade. Once I did that I rebooted one last time it got into a windows repair loop. Nothing would work that i tried to get it out of this loop: Repair Your Computer Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Enable Boot Logging (This did not make a log file that I could get to) So I tried: Last Know Good Configuration (advanced) Still no luck: So I bit the bullet and said I would try in-place upgrade from DVD - it told me I needed to boot from the OS to do an in-place upgrade. Can you say Catch 22? I tried to do everything and finally I had to go to a command prompt and rebuild to the boot sector and re-point it to the C: drive. I am assuming since the Turbo memory driver creates sort of a flash drive on boot that it was still trying to point to that temporary boot partition which no longer exists? After that it would at least boot with an error which flashed by and you could not read I was finally able to get some type of error to appear by trying: Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure Then after replacing the files it said were missing and/or corrupt it got me to the 7b Blue screen error where I am at now. Now I can no longer boot the OS an and a in-place upgrade from the source DVD tells me I have to boot from the hard drive OS to do a in-place upgrade. Can you say that all because of loading one bad driver which stopped Windows update working led me to the inability to do an in-place upgrade from the source DVD. Which in prior versions of the OS was always a fallback. I might lose all my drivers and all of my OS setting but never had to re-install all my programs. So while the fact that Window update now working is not my main problem anymore - I am at a loss to why I need to boot from the OS to do an in-place upgrade of Windows 7? If there are incompatible drivers why can't windows just replace them with defaults and I can reload them. I don't care if all the hardware works just give me a bootable OS with my apps and I will put back to all the working hardware drivers one by one. Any suggestions now instead of a fresh install would be most appreciated. Thanks

I see you've mentione the Repair Your Computer option but you could try the Repair Install option to see if that helps your situation. I spent several hours on the phone today with Microsoft Tech Support regarding this issue. 1) There is no repair install booting from the DVD - it does not exist only a cutom install (After going through it no less than 50/60 times trying to manually repair my machine to a bootable state I never once got it to work and MS support says it does not exist.) 2) The only repair install is booting from the original installed OS on the hard drive and running the setup/repair from a DVD. (Also, if you have something like a hard drive controller driver that is 3rd party - you are risking yourself that even a bootable OS repair install might now work.) Caution Lenovo laptop users with Turbo Memory and controllers in the ACHI mode. Make sure you have plenty of restore points or a system image to restore from if you have to do the BOOT from OS re-install. Unfortunately, I was never able to get my OS back to a booting state so option 2 is not an viable for me and after lots of work with regedit and manually copying hive files around and system drivers/files it still does not boot. Word to the wise. If you install new device drivers make sure you manually create a restore point. Do not use the last known good configuration as evidently this is what wiped out my restore points. And be sure you test your windows update capabilities after every driver and application installation. Evidently this Windows update database corruption is a knonwn problem. I was able to do a roll-back to a good state several times with no issues when this occured previously. It was reproducible and happened to me several times when first loading Windows 7 on a Lenovo X200T laptop and again this weekend when I tried to update the drivers to a newer version. I think it is a HUGE mistake on MS part to not enable the ability to boot from a DVD and do a repair install to get back applications/setting and only lose the windows drivers/OS setup. This has been possible from every OS they have ever made. However, if you are unable to get back to a working OS booting from the hard drive at least in safe mode you have no option but a clean install on the same hard drive and re-installation of all of your applications :( Other than this problem the Win 7 OS has been rock solid since installation and only when messing with 3rd party drivers have I had an issue at all. It is much more stable that Vista ever was and if it was not for the windows update corruption problem I would be very happy. MS I hope you are listening, as the lack of a DVD Boot re-install process, will cause IT staff everywhere a world of hurt when some employee installs a driver he found on the internet and his entire machine blows up only to have to re-install from scratch every one of their applications. This will happen and will continue to happen, especially since this is a new version of your OS. Well off to re-install well over 100 applications configure them and apply all the patches. I guess the only good thing is I know the repair process inside and out and what is possible to repair and what is not :)

Hi Tdampier,Did you try Orbital's suggestion? According the Windows Update log, the issue should be realted to Windows Update datastore on Windows Update temporary folder. Orbital's will delete Windows Update temporary folder and Windows will creat a new datastore on the computer. Thanks.

Just to share my finding, I am having the same error when trying to do Windows Update and after a lot of search and this post give me some hints where it could cause by some third party driver. After a lot of test and finally found that my problem is cause by "Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST)" software which support to enhance SATA disk performance. After I update this to the latest version, then problem solved. If you encounter the similar problem, the first thing you might want to check is to ensure all third party drivers are the latest.

Updating Intel Rapid Storage Technology with the latest version resolved my problem as well.

I had the exact same proble, tried flushing IE cache, cleaning the SoftwareDistribution dowload folder and it did nothing good. Uninstalling Intel Rapid Storage Technology did fix my problem. I will re-install the latest version hoping that it will not break it again ;-) Thanks all
