Windows Update for Nvidia 7600GS failed
I just did some Windows Updates that were available for my Windows 7 beta, and the optional update for my Nvidia 7600GS card failed. I have the AGP version of the card.

Download the apropriate driver from nvidia.com. I only use the drivers they provide--never the ones from microsoft. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-ustexan4u

well, regardless of which place one prefers to get their video card drivers from, the one provided by Microsoft for the card should be tested and the installation/update should at least work.

@ Rossmart - Microsoft gets the drivers for Windows Update from - NVidia and AMD/ATI and even Intel. They might not be the latest bleeding edge drivers you can get on the OEM site, but they're from the OEM. The difference is they've been tested to be stable.@ thebigdintx - I've had similar failures twice before. Do you happen to know what the error message was when it updated?

I thought wolfie said something he did not say. Picture looking through my eyes as I misquote him: "I've had similar failures before. [and do you know what the failures were when I updated?]"So yeah I agree with Rossmart. On this teeny screen. Which I misread. Now I'm in for it.

@ thebigdintx - Do you know what error code Windows Update coughed up when the update to the driver failed? It will be in the Windows Update history log. When you open Windows Update, you can click on View Update History and click on the item that failed. It will pop up a windows where you can right-click and copy the details. Please paste them here. Thanks

thebigdintx - Thanks...I got the exact same error message on both occasions. I actually chose the same option Rossmart proposed - downloading the driver directly from NVidia. But... I have a feeling this may have to do with how Windows Update is configured. If you open up the System properties (Right-click on Computer on the Start Menu and click Properties) and you click on System Protection and the resulting UAC warning, and look on the Hardware tab - you'll see 3 options. The first, "Yes, do this automatically" followed by 3 "No, let me choose what to do" options:1.) Always Install the best driver from Windows Update2.) Only Install driver software from Windows Update if it's not found on my computer.3.) Never install driver software from Windows Update. On my system, the radio button next to #3 is marked. Mind you, I never told it to NEVER install any drivers so it's likely to be the default setting. It would seem that when the driver update is not critical, (optional only), this rule kicks in and prevents Windows Update or Microsoft Update from installing it. If you change the setting to either the "Yes, Do this automatically" or the "Always install best driver" options, and you try downloading the driver by way of Windows Update, it will likely succeed next time around.
