Windows Update crashes
System:Win XP, SP3Athlon based home built PCProblem:Windows Update crashes IE every single time it tries to install the latest version of WU. Happened with IE 6 and IE 7. I click 'Install' when it asks if I want to install Windows Update and IE just stops immediately. No error message, nothing in the logs, etc. Searched through MS KB and no hits on this error. I have no run WU in many months, possibly a year or more, so doing a system restore to time when it worked is not an option.Any ideas out there? Thanks!

Try downloading and installing them manually by downloading them to your desktop and installing them one-by-one. Insert the KB number to get the right updates and choose the one appropriate for your version of Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 and then try the installations. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work. Also read and perform the steps inhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058.If that doesn't help, please repost your question in the Windows Update Forum at:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads where experts in updates will be happy to assist you. Lorien,Thanks for the suggestions, but my system is Windows XP Pro, not Vista. Most of the above does not apply to XP. I did try to reinstall Windows Update, but it didn't seem to have any effect. I have posted this question in the WU forum.Thanks.
