Windows Update broken after attempting SP1 installation
I recently decided to upgrade my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system to Service Pack 1. I opened Windows Update and selected only the SP1 update, then installed. I did this just before leaving for school, as my previous experience of installing Service Packs tells me it can take a great deal of time. Upon arriving home 4hrs later, I checked to see if the installation had been completed, but was surprised to see that the progress bar was only at about 30% And there was no evidence of a system restart. I tried to stop the installation but nothing happened when I clicked the 'stop installation' button. After trying this multiple times, I ended the explorer.exe process and started it again. Windows Update was gone and there seemed to be no issues. I restarted my system just to be sure and there was no issues in shutting down or booting up. I decided to try and install it again this afternoon but when I checked the box next to the update and began it, Windows Update will remain at (0KB total, 0% complete). This occurs with any update I attempt through Windows Update. I attempted a System Restore, but upon restart was given the error that it failed, stating that some files could not be restored. Windows Update still remains broken after numerous restart and restore attempts. What steps should be taken to get Windows Update working again?

Thank you, elusive Mr X for your quick reply. I worked through the first 4 of your troubleshooting methods and the problem still seemed to be occurring. So after that I figured I'd just let it sit for a while and see if anything happened, and sure enough about about 45minutes the update started downloading. I did notice that my firewall profile had been reset to public, so that may have caused the issue. Resetting Windows Update may have also solved the problem. Either way, I am now happily running SP1. Thankyou for your assistance.
