Windows Update Not Working - possibly system corrupt?
I have Windows 7, v64, and I can not update Windows. Whenever I try, I receive notices that it failed because of Error code 8E5E0408 and 8000FFFF. I tried Windows Startup Repair but there was no problem with my system. I used Advanced Tools and that found errors which Windows couldn't automatically resolve, so it sent it off to Windows. Unfortunately I didn't write down what it wrote before I sent it off. In the recent past I also received errors that my Windows was not authentic. This was untrue since it's an OEM Windows and was installed by Lenovo - the company through which I purchased the computer. I called Microsoft and they confirmed that it was a legit copy of Windows and they helped stop that error thankfully, but nothing more. I did run an SFC Scan and received this error message, I don't know what to do with it: C:\Users\Seth>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.logC:\Users\Seth>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps: Open an elevated command prompt. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt Note The Sfcdetails.txt file contains details from every time that the System File Checker tool has been run on the computer. The file includes information about files that were not repaired by the System File Checker tool. Verify the date and time entries to determine the problem files that were found the last time that you ran the System File Checker tool. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: edit sfcdetails.txt Look at the file and see which are damaged. When I follow those instructions, command prompt basically freezes. It doesn't respond with anything and it doesn't offer me the C:/ anymore either... it's very strange. I typed in the words as written...

ok, follow this guide: http://blog.nirsoft.net/2009/09/17/how-to-extract-missing-system-files-from-the-dvd-of-windows-7vista/ and extract the EncDec.dll from the DVD. Now take ownership of the older file and give your account full permissions. Now replace the old damaged DLL with the fresh extracted one."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Here is the worst part - Lenovo - the type of computer I have, refuses to give me a copy of the disc telling me it's not necessary, but they won't help me beyond that because the computer is more than 1 year old (by 2 weeks) and thus beyond the warranty... can I say "arg" again!?!? (though I should add, your concept is more useful than anything else i've gotten thus far)

Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi.dev.log from the folder C:\Windows\Inf and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here. I take a look at the log to see what fails. Here is a link with the files. Sorry they aren't zipped. Please let me know when you;ve looked at them as I don't know if I should really keep this folder public indefinitely. have you replaced the correct file? \C:\Windows\SysWOW64"\[l:20{10}]"EncDec.dll" you must replace the 32Bit DLL. After doing this run this FixIt: How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 This fixes your issue with the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder: 2011-02-27 00:48:12, Info CBS Failed to resolve execution chain. I change the EncDec.dll file from the disc, though the location was "c:\windows\system32\EncDec.dll" not what you posted above. I then ran the fix it, and got this error: "Microsoft Fix it 50202: Service 'Windows Update' [WUSUSERV] could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privleges to stop system services." I do have sufficient privleges, I've also stopped all requests for approval (my comp is on low security right now while I run all of these diagnostics)... any ideas on how to fix that?

Run an InPlace Upgrade [1][2] to repair your windows. Your programs are still usable after doing the InPlace upgrade. Now try to update Windows again. I was able to fix the Window Update problem by updating "Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver. Try that if you haven't updated that before.
