Windows Update Not Working
I am have a odd set of problems. I just finished installing Windows 7 64 Ultimate (clean install) and when I run Windows Update it tells me there are no updates (expect the language ones). Seems odd as my friend's PC, who also just updated, had quite a few. On top of that I installed Office 2007, when I tell Windows Update to "Get updates for other Microsoft products," it opens IE8, goes to the update site and tells me I need to be an Administrator. Running IE8 as an admin gets pass this but the site tells me there are no updates for anything as while. I know there are service packs and security updates but I can't download them. Any ideas? Repairing/reinstalling don't seem to help.

Hi, First, I suggest you open Windows Update in Control Panel and click "View update history" icon to check whether there is any installed update. Meanwhile, please perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Click the Start Button and type in "Notepad" (without the quotation marks) in the open box and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop Cryptsvc ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sdold.old ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 crt2old.old net start wuauserv net start Cryptsvc 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Then choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "temp.bat" (without the quotation marks) as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location. 4. Right click the temp.bat file on Desktop and choose Run as administrator. 5. A DOS-like window will begin processing. Then, please restart the computer and check if we can update now. If there is still not update, please upload Windowsupdate.log file (The file is in C:\Windows folder) to Skydrive (www.skydrive.live.com) and share the link to me for research. Thanks, Novak

I followed your instructions but nothing has changed. I also still can't it to even try to find updates for Office 2007. Here is the link to the Windowsupdate.log . There were two files in the Windows folder by that name, so I hope I gave you the correct one. EDIT: Also I have never used skydrive before so I hope the link works.

Hi, How does the computer connect to Internet, via DSL or router? Is the computer in a domain? After analyzing the log file, I suggest you temporarily turn off the firewall and antivirus program, and then perform the following steps. Reset proxy and proxy cache ============ a. Click the Start Button, type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. b. Click on the Connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button. c. Clear the entries in "Use automatic configuration script" and uncheck "Automatically detect settings." d. Click on the Advanced button. e. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section, f. Click OK, and return to the previous window. Uncheck "Use Proxy Server for your LAN", and click OK to accept the changes. g. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". h. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. i. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter. If the issue persists, please also try the suggestions from the following article: Error code 0x8024402C when you try to install updates on Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites Thanks, Novak

I connect to the internet via a wireless router (a nightmare with Windows 7), which is connected directly to a cable modem. I followed the new steps, but nothing. However when I turned my PC on today I had a message saying there was an important update available. So it might be working but it seems unlikely that the only update I need is one for IE8. It also still will not look for updates for Office 2007. Is it possible Microsoft purposely disabled those updates since they might not be fully compatible with Windows 7?

Actually, Office 2007 is fully compatible with Windows 7 and you might wait for more time until the new update is available. If the update is available, it will offer in Action Center. Thanks,Novak

I was used windows 7 RC. Same update error I got it 1 week back. I tried everything... but no use. Then Windows 7 is used to hang for long time and it is not opening the applications properly. Finally I Re-install Windows 7, but I am unable to activate it. Now I am using Vista... I don't know why that update is not installed properly. -AJ http://www.aloysiusjegan.in

So I have an update on this problem, which was not solved. Apparently when I visit the Windows Update site I'm redirected to V4, which is the XP site. No matter how hard I try I can't load the V6 site that is for Windows 7. Any ideas to to fix this?

Problem solved! Here's what happened. When I installed Windows 7 on my PC I used Windows Easy Transfer. It copied over my XP User Agent data, so every time I visited Windows Update it read my system as XP. So if you are having this problem here is how to check if it is the same, and fix it. 1. In IE8 enter "javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent) ". This will give your current User Data. It will look something like this: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0) If you see a line with "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" this is the XP code and the problem. If you don't see this, your problem is not the same. 2. To fix this, and there maybe a easier way than this but I don't know it, is to edit the user agent registry data. To do that go to "Run" and type "regedit" and enter "OK." 3. Once the program runs look for the following entries: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform On the right side you will see registry keys. The one you are looking for has this "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)." I found mine in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform. 4. Right click on that key and click rename. Enter this for Windows 7 64 "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0" I don't know what the Windows 7 32 is likely that same minus "WOW64." 5. Restart your PC. Everything should work correctly.
