You are unable to install the .NET Framework 1.1 on a Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs-based computer that is not using the English-American default language http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920315MD MOEEN AJAZ KHAN - MCP/N+/A+

Here saw this on another post and it might work. Follow it closely please. It should work for you. The problem that many people are having with KB953297 is that it is looking for a file "NETFX.MSI." Perhaps the file was deleted in a previous update for .NET 1.1; I searched my computer and found nothing. So I downloaded the DOTNETFX.EXE redistributable package from Microsoft's download site If you haven't manually downloaded the KB953297, then do that and place these files all in the same folder. The KB file name should be NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe. Start this program, then when you get the error message, click "browse" and change the folder name to where the NETFX* files are located. The installation update will successfully complete, and you will no longer have to deal with it! I don't understand why Microsoft just doesn't check for these files, and if they don't exist, ask the user if they would like to download them (or if automatic update, just download the required files without user intervention!). Good Luck! Please rate me up if you find my post helpful. Thank you!

I had a similar problem after doing a non-destructive restore. For more information about the .NET Framework cleanup tool, see the following links. Use at your own risk and read the documentation that come with this application. What this application does is to remove .Net Framework (all versions from system). Then you have to reinstall .Net Framework 1 and all update fixes then restart pc, then reinstall .Net Framework 2 and update fixes, then restart pc, then .Net Framework 3 with update fixes and restart pc. Then if you want install .Net Framework 3.5 with update fixes and restart pc. What are the ramifications of using this tool; I am not a tech so ask a certified MS support tech, but as always you will be the one who will make the final decision on whether you use this toll or not. This maybe old stuff by now because this reply posting is 6 days late. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121918 http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx Backwards Geeker

Thank you Adamjv12345. Your solution worked perfectly for me and I didn't have to uninstall .NET 1.1.Here's exactly what I did:1. Download DotNetFX.exe for the .NET 1.1 version.2. Run the DotNetFX.exe install package only to the point of gettting it to extract the installation media. a. Find the aforementioned installation media and COPY IT to a location of your choice. I found mine in c:\Documents and Settings\{youruserid}\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.TMP\ b. Cancel the installation process initiated in step 1. You will still have your copy if you performed step 2a as instructed.3. Download KB953297 (NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe) as Adamjv12345 suggested. a. Run NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe. b. It will fail but will give you the opportunity to point the process at the folder containing netfx.msi AND netfx1.cab. At this point, browse to the folder where you copied the DotNetFX.exe extraction from step 2a above. c. The KB953297 updateshould complete successfully.4. Since I manually control my Windows Updates, I double-clicked the Windows Update shield icon on my system tray where the annoying KB953297 was waiting to be applied ... for the umpteenth time. a. Let KB953297 run from Windows Update. It will quickly see that it has already been applied (step 3 above) and will complete successfully and will go away forever. Good riddance to KB953297!! Sometimes you just wanna kick the sloppy Windows Update developer and QA team. It just shouldn't be this much of a hassle to apply a stinking security patch. Enough squaking on my part ...Good Luck!

Hi. I have tried following your instructions and am running into problems. When I run DotNetFX.ese for .NET 1.1, the files extract and then immediately I get an error message that says, "Microsoft .NET framework setup failed. If this problem continues, contact Product Support Services." This message comes up before I have any chance to hit the cancel button. I have tried. Then, when I search for the files netfx.msi and netfx1.cab, they are no where to be found on my machine, even though I could see them extract. (I have searched all hidden and system files.) Do you have any idea why this might be happening or any suggestion for me? I really want to get rid of this stupid KB953297 update. Thanks, Beth Terry Aunt Ann's Agency

Hi all: I have a desktop running Win XP SP3,with both IE8 and Firefox 3.5.4. I have encountered the same problem with the NET Framework 1.1 SP1 window update causing the same problem. Hi all: I continue to produce the same failed results, despite having followed the process religiously! The requisite files netfx.msi and netfx1.cab are clearly in a folder in the C:\ drive, and the NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe is also clearly in the same folder. The error message is "Windows Installer: This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."KB953297-X86 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. Send Error Report" This error report has been sent several times by me. Can anyone provide a better approach to a workable solution? Thanks, in advance, Arbyem

I have a solution for this and it works for everyone. Just do exactly what I say and it will solve all your problems. Nothing else is needed.1. Download NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exefrom http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=78ac8b97-8327-4ae1-8bb0-6cf227f3968fto your root directory 'C:/' (you can download it anywhere but then you have to move it to your root directory so that you don't have to bother changing the path names etc).2.Click your Windows 'START' button, and then click the 'RUN' command there.Type "cmd" (no quote marks!) in the dialog line there (called 'Open:') and then click the 'OK' button.3. Your dark DOS window will now open. There, after the command sign '>' type "CD \" (no quote marks!) and then press ENTER.4. This will take you to your root directory and there you will see your command prompt 'C:\>'.5. Type the following at the command prompt 'C:>' "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe /t:c:\ /c" (no quote marks!)and then press ENTER.[alternatively you can copy paste the line to the DOS screen using your mouse, NO shortcut Cntl+V, it will not work on DOS screen]6. This will extract the missing 'S867460.msp' file to your root directory. That is all you need indeed!7. Then run your NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exefile in the root directory.8. When the installation procedure asks you for the missing 'S867460.msp' file just click the 'Browse' button and locate the 'S867460.msp' file you have just extracted to your root directory and then click 'OK'.9. Installation will continue and your update will be complete. That is ALL.(PS: The problem is that we have a habit of deleting the 'tmp' files and folders and this is not good for microsoft, so you have to keep all your installation 'tmp's intact or alternatively save them to a safe place so you can recover any files needed for further setups later). Here is where I found this solution:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885916

SOLUTIONI solved the problem, but none of this did it, and may be unnecessary for most of you. I continually had problems installing .NET 1.1 SP1, NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe. This was a totally clean install on Server 2003 R2 x64. I had run the cleanup tool, and installed .NET and the patches in the often-given order on the Microsoft forums and here.I solved this by running the .NET cleanup tool (I am virtually positive this was unnecessary in hindsight), installing .NET1.1, .NET 2.0, then extracting the files for .NET 1.1 SP1 (This is the command to extract them to the already created C:\temp: NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe /Xp:c:\temp), and simply right clicked on the extracted file, S867460.msp, and hit apply. It went in fine. From there, it was all set. This is not a problem with our systems, but the patch.

This same thing always happens to me when I decide to wipe everything off my PC once a year to start fresh, by hitting the F10 and using the destructive mode to clean up the PC back to where it looks when you first buy it. When I go to Windows Update to get the needed updates the KB953297 is the one which downloads and then fails to install. I've gotten use to this peculiar behavior so I had went and looked into my Add/Remove control panel applet and found that the update was already there. I removed it from Add/Remove and I just restart my computer and when I log back on, I do a quick IE temp/cookie clean-up and then a disk cleanup and go back to Windows Update. I usually find that when I click the custom updates instead of express, the KB953297 update is listed there. It downloads and installs with no problems.

Thank you Adamjy12345! Unbelievable! After spending a whole day with MS support yesterday Jan 27 2010 and getting nowhere, I followed your suggestion today and it appears my troubles with the kb953297 issue are over. I just rebooted and checked and this time I was not asked to update the .net framework (KB 953297).I can't remember exactly what I did since the shock of seeing "successfully installed" knocked me over. However, to others, I say use the classic windows search option to find the netfx files after running the dotnetfx.exe first. The other search (I am running windows XP PRO) did not work, since I believe it does not immediately locate brand new files. Also, I did not see the file named netfx.msi when I did the search.Wait now, new information appears: my memory is beginning to return, and I seem to recall that *NDP1* completed successfully the second time I tried without me having to tell it where the *netfx* files were; so NDP1.sp1-KB953297-X86.exe found the files it needeD without my help, even though I never actually saw the location of the netfx.msi file! I hope you have the same good fortune. Just remember to run dotnetfx.exe first, then run the NDP*.exe file at least twice if it doesn't work the first time. I know this makes little sense, but hey, these things are way too complicated for me to describe accurately.p.s. Adam -- I don't know how to "mark you up" but you sure deserve it. Update - I marked you up from 6 to 7. Hope that is what you mean. (Jan 28/10 @ 1115hrs.)Regards to all.

Wow Adam! This is the answer that worked. I wish I had found this two days ago. I could have saved a lot of time and agony. Microsoft drives me crazy with their useless support system with cryptic explanations which I have often found require a level of technical understanding which I think few possess. Thanks for allowing me to end my day with a feeling of satisfaction.

Thanks for the advice! I've had this problem for a long time though I didn't see it did any harm. But of course it was a nuisance as the automatic update continously reminded me of this update and still never finished the update. My steps: Preliminary task: If you have automatic updates turned on you should double click the the yellow shield icon in the task bar and check the SECOND checkbox so you will be able to choose what is going to be installed. If there are several updates let them run; Though UNCHECK the .NET 1.1 update! 1. Download your language version of DOTNETFX.EXE(.NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package) from:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=78ac8b97-8327-4ae1-8bb0-6cf227f3968f 2. Download your language version of NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe(.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1...) fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=sv&FamilyID=78ac8b97-8327-4ae1-8bb0-6cf227f3968f Run DOTNETFX.EXE and then NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe and everything should go well. (It did for me!) Lastly, if you have automatic updates turned on you should double click the the yellow shield icon in the task bar and check the SECOND checkbox so you will be able to choose what is going to be installed. You will see only the .NET 1.1 update! Press OK! to Let it install. However the process finishes without installing anything since .NET 1.1 already is installed, but that irritating little yellow shield icon disappears. Cheers

Download NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=78ac8b97-8327-4ae1-8bb0-6cf227f3968f to your root directory 'C:/' (you can download it anywhere but then you have to move it to your root directory so that you don't have to bother changing the path names etc).2. Click your Windows 'START' button, and then click the 'RUN' command there. Type "cmd" (no quote marks!) in the dialog line there (called 'Open:') and then click the 'OK' button.3. Your dark DOS window will now open. There, after the command sign '>' type "CD \" (no quote marks!) and then press ENTER.4. This will take you to your root directory and there you will see your command prompt 'C:\>'.5. Type the following at the command prompt 'C:>' "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe /t:c:\ /c" (no quote marks!) and then press ENTER. [alternatively you can copy paste the line to the DOS screen using your mouse, NO shortcut Cntl+V, it will not work on DOS screen]6. This will extract the missing 'S867460.msp' file to your root directory. That is all you need indeed!7. Then run your NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe file in the root directory.8. When the installation procedure asks you for the missing 'S867460.msp' file just click the 'Browse' button and locate the 'S867460.msp' file you have just extracted to your root directory and then click 'OK'.9. Installation will continue and your update will be complete. That is ALL.(PS: The problem is that we have a habit of deleting the 'tmp' files and folders and this is not good for microsoft, so you have to keep all your installation 'tmp's intact or alternatively save them to a safe place so you can recover files needed for further setups later). Here is where I found this solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885916

Is NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe located in the root directory C:\? If you saved it somewhere else, the command won't find the file.
