Windows Update Freezes
I've been trying to update Windows 7 Home Premium for months now, but the darn thing freezes every time. I've searched, but none of the solutions I found worked for me. At one point, using the services.msc method, I actually got to the download page, and it wasn't frozen, but the 300kb update never downloaded. It stayed at 0% for ~10 minutes, until I clicked "X" and it froze. This is really getting on my nerves, especially now that the Matrix supposedly goes on sale for the Zune, and I wanted to see it. :| Any help would be appreciated. I'm very computer literate, and an aspiring programming, so don't worry about technicalities. Thanks.

Hi, You may refer to the following steps to see if it helps. Step 1.Verify Windows Update services 1. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" bar, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 2. Double click the service "Windows Update". 3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service. 4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service. You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know. Step 2.Rename WU temporary folders 1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop Cryptsvc cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution rd /s /q DataStore ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start Cryptsvc 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose "Desktop" from the left panel as the location. 4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator". 5. You will see a DOS-like window processing. After that, please check if updates can be installed correctly. Hope this helps. Thanks, but I've already tried that. It allowed Windows Update to start, but it sits at 0% for a file that's only a few KBs. I think the problem is that BITS refuses to start. I checked the registry to ensure the correct system path, and it is correct, I've also ensured that that it's on automatic, which it is. When I try to manually start it, this window shows: http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5739/errorwithbits.png

have you tried deleting (resetting) the downloader queue? c:\programdata\microsoft\network\downloader there are usually 2 .dat files in there, try deleting them and then running windows update again. Disclaimer: This method worked in XP, I can't say for sure if it's the same with Windows 7. Maybe cut and paste them somewhere else, and put them back if it doesn't work.Ok, so I changed my name...you can still call me Tom if you like. It's a...jump...to conclusions...mat.

I'll try that, but I'll back them up first. EDIT: It's working! Many thanks!
