Windows Update Failure
Has anyone had trouble getting Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.63.118.0) to install? I get a failure every time, regardless of reboot. It is the responsibility and duty of everyone to help the underprivileged and unfortunate among us.

Here are a few things to try, one of which may resolve the problem: 1. Sometimes the update log will give a clue as to the reason/error. Go to the Windows Orb (Start), type %windir%\windowsupdate.log and press Enter. To find the error(s), go to the end of the file (Ctrl+End) then use Find (Ctrl+F) to check for the word 'fatal', use search Up to search upwards from the end of the file. 2. You could try stopping the Windows Update service, rename the software distribution folder then restart the service, as follows:- Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator, click the Windows Orb (Start), type services.msc and press Enter. Scroll down to Windows Update service, right-click it then click Stop.- Click the Windows Orb (Start), type %windir% in the Start Search box and then press Enter. Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to, say, SoftwareDistributionOLD. By renaming the folder your update history will appear to have been erased as it is not presented to the Windows Update website. However, updates can still be viewed by going to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates.- Go back to Administrative Tools > Windows Update service (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so), right-click it then click Start. Try to download the missing updates again. 3. Go to Internet Options > Security Tab > 'Trusted sites' icon > click Sites then uncheck 'Require server verification' and add these two entries http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and http://*.windowsupdate.com.Click Close, Apply and OK.

I pulled some information from the update log, which I have listed below. I have no idea what caused the failures. 2009-07-23 10:59:34:934 1108 eb0 DnldMgr BITS job {8C623C48-7A3A-4B25-ADAB-003C1662880F} hit a transient error, updateId = {31814384-8689-4E1D-B452-37A5FE5DCD58}.100, error = 0x80072F78 2009-07-23 10:59:34:934 1108 eb0 DnldMgr Attempt no. 1 to resume the job 2009-07-23 10:59:35:074 1108 f6c DnldMgr BITS job {8C623C48-7A3A-4B25-ADAB-003C1662880F} hit a transient error, updateId = {31814384-8689-4E1D-B452-37A5FE5DCD58}.100, error = 0x80072F78 2009-07-23 10:59:35:074 1108 f6c DnldMgr Attempt no. 2 to resume the job 2009-07-23 10:59:35:230 1108 f6c DnldMgr BITS job {8C623C48-7A3A-4B25-ADAB-003C1662880F} hit a transient error, updateId = {31814384-8689-4E1D-B452-37A5FE5DCD58}.100, error = 0x80072F78 2009-07-23 10:59:35:230 1108 f6c DnldMgr Attempt no. 3 to resume the job 2009-07-23 10:59:35:371 1108 eb4 DnldMgr BITS job {8C623C48-7A3A-4B25-ADAB-003C1662880F} hit a transient error, updateId = {31814384-8689-4E1D-B452-37A5FE5DCD58}.100, error = 0x80072F78 2009-07-23 10:59:35:371 1108 eb4 DnldMgr Will not attempt to resume the job as it has reached the maximum number of attempts. 2009-07-23 10:59:35:371 1108 eb4 DnldMgr Error 0x80072f78 occurred while downloading update;
