Windows Update will download and install updates for defender, mobile device center, etc but will never download Windows Vista updates [8 of them]???it used to give error 8000FFFF, but now just fails with no error code... just a blank space where the code should be.?

Do you have dialup? I had same problem, but found that connecting to the Internet prior to running Update allowed downloads to Vista.

Very few updates in Vista will require a re-boot, but AIUI, you should see something indicating success or failure.

I am getting this error too when Vista tries to install update KB929777. Has Microsoft found any solutions for this since the last message to this forum was posted? Thanks, Mo

Here is the answer to your problems. Go to your control panel under add and remove programs you will see a hot fix for kb929777. Uninstall this hot fix. Windows will tell you to reboot, do it. Download the kb929777 for the windows website not the auto update site, (if you do it will install the hot fix first before the kb929777 and then kb929777 will not install again). After successful update you will need to reboot. check for updates( there should be none and your history should show successful update on the kb929777. I also took out 3 gb of mem. before I did this but before it would still not download until I removed the hot fix, so I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE MEM. FIRST. But try it with the mem. in first and it may save you a step.

Worked perfectly and I didn't move any memory. Thanks

An even easier solution is: 1: Open up "Control Panel" and navigate your way to "Programs and Features". 2: Click "View installed updates" on the left hand side. 3: Find the update KB929777 and uninstall it. 4: Attempt to install the update again in Windows Update 5: Once successful, restart your PC.

I had this problem. At first I removed 2GB RAM and tried again. No luck. Put RAM back in. Removed the hotfix for KB929777 and restarted. Installed the manually downloaded KB929777 update and then installed. Restarted again. Checked control panel. update KB929777 now reflected. The key is to remove the hotfix and then do the manual install as stated. Thanks for the clue.

Well- I have this exact same error message, but I have checked through my installed updates, and I do not have KB929777 installed. So what now? Is there another update that can cause this same problem?
July 31st, 2007 8:54pm

Same here wfeg. I don't have KB929777 installed either and when I went and got that update and tried to install it manually from Microsoft it failed. Every manual update I have tried to install fails. I've been getting the 8000FFFF error message for over a month now. I've tried every suggestion on every forum on the internet....and nothing works.

Sean137- I too am still searching for an answer. Below is what I have done that has been beneficial. 1. I found a web site that said that Microsoft gave free support for Windows Update problems, and I sent an E-mail to Microsoft. Several days later, I got a reply, asking for further details about my computer setup, to which I replied. Although I can't remember the web site where I found this message, I can give you the E-mail address that I replied too. Unfortunately, I have not received any further correspondence from this E-mail address since sending off the setup details. However, the E-mail address is: APAC Global Consumer SupportWINDO.0000.AU.00.EN.DCA.KLM.TS.1FL.PBA.00.WB@css.one.microsoft.com, and the contact name is Ajay Gunasekaran Microsoft Australia & New Zealand Online Technical Support. 2. Suggest that you look in the following 2 locations for reasons why Windows Update no longer works for you: C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log There is a lot of information about error code 8000FFFF in these 2 files. Good luck- please let me know if you have any success. I am going to phone Microsoft Support tomorrow. Wfeg

BIGS1922: It worked like a charm by following your instructions to a "T", with no memory required to be removed. 'puter is a brand-new Dell XPS M1210 with 4GB of RAM, loaded up to the max (about 5 Grand worth I might add, 'way too many bucksfor this kind of a petty problem). Does anybody here notice that thisSNAFU seems to be unique to Dell notebooks? While Microsoft is (presumably) working on a fix for this real pain-in-the-a** nightmare, could perhaps the Microsoft liaison guy for Dell notify them, so at least this fix could be posted on their Bulletin Board Forum? Everybody and their Dog is having the same problem, and there's no reason to go through all of this brain damage in the meantime when the work-around is so relatively easy (although it should be unnecessary). But mainly Microsoft, could you please address this issue expeditiously? We're dying out here, 1GB of RAM at a time... Thank you.

Hi guys,Firstly, thx for nskillen for the post, it worked for me, but before i've made the changes in the registry, I've stopped the Windows Update Service and deleted the files and directories in %windir%/SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and restart the Windows Update Service. After this I've made the changes in the registry. Also works with the 8024001b error.Kabi

September 25th, 2007 12:21am

mrbartus wrote: How did you back up the components key in #3? I have a hard time doing it. Thanks Beforemaking any of the alterations suggested previously, you should make a backup of 'Regedit'. You can either make a full backup, or a partial backup. The proceedure is almost the same for both situations. For a full backup, in Regedit, go File/Export, and look down the bottom and select Export Range/All, choose a filename in the filename box, e.g. 'Regedit 25-Sep-07', and click 'Save'. It doesn't matter what branch you have chosen (read the next paragraph). For apartial backup, in Regedit, make sure you first click on the branch 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS' in the LHS pane, then go File/Export, and look down the bottom and select Export Range/Selected branch, choose a filename in the filename box, e.g. 'Regedit (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS) 25-Sep-07', and click 'Save'.

after extensive reading, i figured nothing would help me. fortunately my vista pc is something i can always restore from image.all i did to fix the "error 8000FFFF" was to disable the firewall, defender, autoupdates. in short, i left the pc unprotected. i turned off system resotre on the C:\ drive and ran disk cleanup. then rebooted the PC. then i fired up windows update, and i was able to update windows. after everything completed, i enabled everything again. i hope i don't have to do this every time there is an update, but so far it worked.

Solution 1 Third party program could be affecting the WU Service (anti-spyware programs, Internet/web accelerators, Firewall/Anti-Virus programs) if you have one of them disable it and try the update. If not, then suggest you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to whatever you like. How to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in Vista : 1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator) Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools Double-click Services (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.) Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop. 2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. 3. Restart your machine If solution 1 not worhty then try this, Solution 2 1.From admin command prompt type net stop wuauserv and net stop cryptsvc and then delete the softwaredistribution folder under c:\windows. 2.Look for these files under c:\windows\winsxs Pending.xml and Pending.grl Take the ownership of these files and delete them. Along with this also check if you have these values under registry PendingXmldentifier NextQueueEntryIndex AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving in the location HKLM/Components If present delete them as well. Restart the computer and try updating again.

I've read most of the posts on this particular forum for 8000FFFF. I have a 10 month old HP laptop & just had to use the recovery disc--again--which completely formats the hard drive & reinstalls everything as it was out of the box. This is the4thtime I've had to do this in the past 2 months. I don't do anything out of the ordinary with the computer that might explain why Vista keeps fataly crashing. Now that the computer is once again a clean slate, it gives me some goofy error message preventing me from downloading much needed updates???? I AM DONE WITH MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, AND VISTA. I will be saving up to buy a Mac. I've heard so many good things about it but have hesitated because of the perceived inablility to run popular programs. No more hesitation for me. Good bye Microsoft--(you should thank me for not unleashing my emotions in this post with the very appropriate use of perfectly placed expletives). Dennis

Windows Update is central to shaky & clearly untested software; solutions include deleting bits of Registry, why? Unsurprisingly, I expect WU to do this for me; like many others Isupplied information & dumps to Microsoft who either do not read or comprehend content. Do software developers read material supplied, is the art of system-testing unknown? Hailing from right-first-time every-timemachine-code programming back in 1971 I am staggered by the level of Microsoft... incompetance. Stripping-out embedded-scripts should be integral to Windows XP, Vista... Why would any home, business... user want third-parties to corrupt data, software... Messenger too fails to install, how hard can it be for Windows XP, Vista... to automatically re-install operating-system, utilities, Acrobat Reader...online. Zombie-computers have the potential to crash servers; Microsoft can resolve this & related issues within days [e.g., remove .exe .dll programs].

August 10th, 2008 8:14pm

Well I'm having this issue with a Windows 2008 Server machine as well. The KB for Vista does not apply to 2008 Server and I do not have the values in HKLM\COMPONENTS that are mentioned in this thread. So I tried stopping the Windows Update service and renaming the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. This seemed to work but I ended up getting the same error message again once it redownloaded everything.Turns out with Windows 2008 Server you must have the Users group with read permissions on the root system drive. We've removed this account from the root drives with NT4, Win2000 Server, Win2003 Server, and thought we'd be able to do it with Win2008 Server but apparently not. Just adding the Users group back to the C: fixed the issue on 2008 Server.

I am having this same problem on my vista laptop. Where do I find these files in the HKLM/Components drop downlists? Both of my security programs (McAfee and SpySweeper) now fail on my computer, so I'm thinking these updates need to be made quickly. Please help! I am not very well versed in computer language (it took me a little while to figure out how to access the registry haha), but I really need to get this fixed!

ok guys i had this problem a few times and i have posted about how to fix a number of times. u need to go to microsoft site and find hotfix for KB929777. so should also be a manual install do not download of the auto update this will not fix ur problem!. once u have downloaded the manual hotfix install. have a look in ur updates to see whats installed look for the origanal KB929777. uninstall it and reboot. once rebooted locate hotfix.kb929777 install and reboot. then run auto updates. you know if it works if none of ur updates fail. hope this helps alan

wearyfootsteps wrote: Talilaner you are a f*ck!ng genius. I've spent weeks trying to figure out why i'd have 6 updates that refused to install and by chance i came across your post. from deleting registry values to stopping the services and changing folders nothing worked. then i read your post and remembered that i had created an account with gimped access for my younger brother to use while he visited (he's curious and i didn't want vista-critical files to disappear). i granted read access to MYCOMPUTER\Users : lo and behold all updates installed correctly. i bow down and kiss your feet for fixing this annoyance by your remarkable post. spread this far and wide, i'm sure there are other users just as frustrated as i am (i can't possibly be the only one posting on these forums on the internet that had forgotten about changing permissions....) You are correct, he is! I just got Vista and couldn't believe that I was getting such an error so quickly. I expected to Google the error code and find a quick answer from a Microsoft site. I couldn't believe that I got site hits from 2007 with people who had the same problem with no solution. I happened into this forum and read his post and then checked the permissions and did what he said and now the updates work. Thanks for the help mang.

I am running Vista Ultimate and have not been able to get automated updates or do Disk Degragment for over a year now. Everytime I have gone to Microsoft downloads and tried to run the particular update and i get a reponse that my computer does not need it. yet I show 18 criticals on my windows auto update.

Thank you very much for this post. I have been having problems with updater for some time now. I have had many failed updates and yesterday I began receiving the 8000FFFF error telling em that updater could not update files. I tried a few things then found your above post and followed the instructions. Only two of the three components were present, however after backing up the Components I deleted the remaining two. After reboot I started updater and after it installed a file, it downloaded 27 UPDATES and installed them all successfully. I added two optional updates afterward, then in a few minutes two additional important updates became available and those installed as well. Again, thank you very much for this excellent advice.
