The updates listed below failed on my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate machine today, and I've tried four times. Also tried MrFixit. No joy. One thing flaky about my system that I've noticed is that clicking on a partially hidden window does not always bring it forward to make it the active window. I'm using Avast Free. No infections reported. How do I begin to troubleshoot this mess? Is there a log somewhere that the Windows Updater writes to, where there would be some clue as to what is causing the update to fail? The failure occurs after the reboot when Windows is configuring itself. Hi, The error code is consistant with a network access issue. I would suspect that Avast is interfering with the process or perhaps some other 3rd party security firewall. I would advise temporarily removing Avast from the System and installing MS Security Essentials in its place and then re-try the update. Thanks for the reply, Martin. Since I had problems with Security Essentials, I removed it a while ago. There's probably a thread here somewhere with the errors I was getting. I permanently disabled all of Avast's protections and the updates are still failing with the same error code. I will try the total uninstall of Avast and see whether that works.

Yes, I have tried the troubleshooting suggestions in the link. Weird thing with partially hidden windows continues -- cannot bring the window that is "behind" another window forward by clicking on it. For example I had Notepad open with the UpdateLog contents and was trying to get back to IE to update this post, and could not get IE to become the active window until I had closed Notepad. Here's the log (cut into several pieces because of 6K max length requirement here). Just to say I am having similar problems, and I am Using Avira and Zone alarm firewall. Fails what ever I have tried, wheras I had no problem until the latest 8 updates.

I'm having the exact same issue. Same 8 updates, only I'm running Win 7 Pro and I use ad-aware. I've tried the above still same issue after the restart the update gets to 15% then reverts. I then get the updates need a restart message all over again. this has gone on for weeks.

If i remember correctly error 5 means "Access denied". There could be few reasons Are you running the cmd as "Run As Administrator" or in regular user mode. (need to run as admin) Do you have admin right to that machine. (even if you have admin rights you need to elevate it to Administrator) Something else is using that process and doesn't allow you to stop it. (try reboot and change the service type to manual)

I just want to say that I have been trying to resolve this problem for a couple of weeks (it seems like) with no success. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64bit and the only real ill effect I've seen is that it severely slows down reboots because Microsoft keeps trying to install the failed updates and goes through all the obligatory steps needed to do the job. I never get any notification of failure unless I go to the logs on my own. All my anti spyware and antivirus are Microsoft products so I ruled that out early on. If I have any network connection problems I can't see evidence of them. My only network anomaly is that I use Open DNS instead of my ISP's DNS servers. I guess I will try the incremental installation suggested by JohnB. I had actually thought about that but was too lazy to go through all the steps.

This worked for me too. I got optimistic and tried the oldest 4 first, then 2 and then the last two John identified. No problems this way. I have Win 7 x64 running AVG Internet Security 2012 and was getting the same repeated failures as everyone above.
