Windows Update Error code 80240038 on Windows 7 IE8
WIndows update fails with "Error Code: 80240038 on Windows 7, IE8" regardless of whether the update is initiated by Microsoft's update website or via "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update".This is occurring on one of 78 new workstations that were implemented over a month ago.Having read a forum on Egghead, I reconfigures the "Windows Update" service from "Automatic Delayed Start" to run "Automatically" and experienced no success.Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi FritzTEK,Thanks for posting in Microsoft Technet Forums. Error code 80240038 can be caused by failed proxy server, Windows Firewall or anti-virus. To resolve this kind of issue, I would like to propose the following suggestions:1. Temperarily disable any security software and turn off Windows Firewall, then update again. 2. If you have ISA installed, switch the proxy or bypass the ISA to update. 3. What is the number of Windows Update? Hi Dale. Thanks for the input.I disabled Anti-Virus and placed the client in a group that removes all firewall restrictions. This was not successful.Manual download of the update through Microsoft Update Catalog failed as the Active X controls never prompted, regardless of the IE trusted site and Internet Security setting. In comparison, I was able to access the Microsoft Update Catalog with much more restrictive policy settings and Anti-Virus enabled.Do you have any further recommendations

Additionally, you can try to reset the IE settings or perform a Clean Boot to access Microsoft Update Catalog . We were unsuccessful with the recommended steps. To resolve the matter, we have deployed WSUS.
