Bryan Are you using an elevated command prompt for that command? Did you stop the Windows Update service before using that command? Go to this thread. We have had good luck with this process solving the error message 80070424. Look at the second message in the thread and follow the instructions very carefully. windows update error 8E5E0442 - TechNet Forums: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3448011&SiteID=17 If this post helps to resolve your issue, click the Mark as Answer button at the top of this message.By marking a post as Answered, you help others find the answer faster. Hi, I tried everything in the above post, and I still received error code 80070424. I have Vista Ultimate 64 Bit, service pack 1. Updates used to work, but the last time they worked was in June 2008. I can't tell you the exact dates, because all the changes recommended in the above post caused my update history to be wiped out. Any ideas, John

I have Vista Basic 32 Bit and I was getting error (Error(s) Found:error Code 80070424). I did a search and found all of this helpful info (mentioned below) and I did it all to no avail because I still got the same error messages trying to get windows updates. I finally went to the Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/browse.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=8D7DD8D7-1CA6-4632-BAEF-E7C0750ED02E selected 'Windows Installer 4.5 / (Windows Installer 4.5 RedistributableWindows Installer 4.5 Redistributable) for my Operation system (32 Bit). Installed, rebooted and I am now able to get all my updates. Error(s) Found:error Code 80070424 http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=3f426f78-c5cf-4b47-b402-95c0fef07a07&p=1 Every time I click on 'check for updates' the screen changes to 'checking for updates' then a moment later says 'windows could not search for new updates' and Error found 80070424. if i put regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll into run, i get this error msg: (in a RegSvr32 window) The module "wuaueng.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005. Every time I click on 'check for updates' the screen changes to 'checking for updates' then a moment later says 'windows could not search for new updates' and Error found 80070424. if i put regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll into run, i get this error msg: (in a RegSvr32 window) The module "wuaueng.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005. 80070424 > Due to a bug in BITS 1.5 OOB setup, after BITS 1.5 install, the BITS service is deleted, > but the 1.5 install returns success code. BITS 1.5 binaries are copied to the machine, but > the service doesnt exist. This can also happen if the BITS service is explicitly deleted > by running the command sc delete bits The above explanation was for a previous Version of BITS but, there *has* been an update for BITS since Vista came out. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159 Is BITS disabled ? It can be set to Manual and the system will update successfully but, will not update if BITS is Disabled. Suggest you run the BITS Repair Tool to see if that helps resolve the issue after installing the update for it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520 > if i put regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll into run, i get this error msg: > (in a RegSvr32 window) The module "wuaueng.dll" was loaded but the call > to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005. 0x80070005 refers to an Access Denied message. Either the file is not present and no security descriptor can be written to it or, 3rd party software is 'protecting' it from any changes. Locate wuaueng.dll in WINDOWS\system32 Right click it, choose Properties Click the Version tab What Version level does it show ? It should be 7.0.6000.381 What is the antivirus software and/or security software currently installed ? Open the Services console fromStart > Run > type in services.mscClick OKClick on Services and locateBackground Intelligent Transfer Service [BITS]Double click on it to determine if it is Running and what the Startuptype is. As mentioned previously, it can be set to Manual.See if you can stop and restart the service if it is currently running. There is no place to manually download the latest version of the WindowsUpdate Agent [WUA] and the system can't access the Windows Update site, correct ? If the above is true than the only recourse is to completely and totallydisable NAV for now. All of it's services must be stopped, too. Please consult the provided Help file or Symantec's web site to learnhow to accomplish this. Then see if Internet Explorer can access Windows Update so that thelatest version of WUA can be installed. This will be done in thebackground when, and if, the system can access WU.One last thing you can try, with Internet Explorer *closed*,open Internet Options in the Control PanelClick the Programs tabClick the Manage Add-ons buttonLook for WUWebControl ClassClick on it to highlight it, then click the Update ActiveX buttonIf it succeeds, then close Internet Options and see if IE can nowaccess WU REMEMBER to reenable NAV after attempting the above. BITS was already running, when i checked. it was in auto with delay mode. There is no wuwebcontrol class in internet properties/programs/manage add ons, either Not sure where you obtained WUA, but last I looked it's still at the previous version, which is already installed on your system, but apparently not completely or properly installed. Was it from the link here ? : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494 > There is no wuwebcontrol class in internet properties/programs/manage > add ons, either Show hidden files, folders, and system files: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#vista Using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\system32 wuweb.dll is supposed to be resident in the above subfolder It shows in Add-ons as WUWebControl Class If it's not present, then the system will never update successfully via the Windows Update site. > i'm not sure if it is nav related, as the computer ran > fine for months updating itself -WITH nav running.. It's not now, is it ? NAV is not allowing the required Updating files to be updated. Since MS has not provided a manual means to download the required Software controls and the system can not access Windows Update without wuweb.dll being updated to the latest version ... you're stuck. Suggest you call PSS and report this issue. Since this is security related, e.g. not being able to install security updates, then there should be no charge for support with this: > Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product > Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are > associated with security updates. Stick to this one issue so that the support 'person' does not get confused and attempt to charge for support. Just say that the system can not install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent and no subsequent security updates can be installed. Period. <w> the link from where i got the WUA was http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx (at the end of bullet point 1) i have shown hidden files, folders, and system as explained at the link you provided; there is still no sign of wuweb.dll ...... there is a wuwebv.dll (160kb size) and nothing else close. In 'manage add ons', WuWebControll Class is not visible in any of the subsections (the pull down menu from 'show' -eg 'add-ons that have been used by internet explorer') if you're sure that NAV is the culprit, would an uninstall of that program put things right again? Not that this is an ideal solution. Otherwise I can call PSS... it's just that in my experience I expect to be put through to a man with a script, who will start at the very beginning and end up telling me i need to reformat my hard drive. is there really nothing else i can do? =( -- getalexfr ------------------------------------------------------------------------ getalexfr's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=30456 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=814712 http://forums.techarena.in Right click wuwebv.dll, choose Properties. What Version level is it at ? It appears that the file name has changed in Vista. Nice that MS doesn't inform their MVPs about this, eh ? Vista update files: wucltux.dll wuauclt.exe wuaueng.dll wups2.dll wuapi.dll wudriver.dll wups.dll wuapp.exe wuwebv.dll <----- Bingo From what I've found on the net, those files should all be at V. 7.0.6000.381 now. Using the link you posted, it STILL points to the previous Version of the WUA <sigh> Suggest you see if you can totally disable NAV instead of uninstalling it for now. Then try registering those .dll files from an Elevated Command Prompt Start > Search > type in cmd *Right* click cmd and choose ' Run as administrator ' Click through the prompts, supplying a password if one exists. At the Command Prompt type these commands and press Enter after *each one*: regsvr32 wucltux.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wups2.dll regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wudriver.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wuwebv.dll exit Restart the system with NAV still totally disabled. Now see if IE can access Windows Update or, try the Windows Update 'thing' in Control Panel. IF the system can not do either, than contact PSS and inform them that you need the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent since the system can not access Windows/Microsoft Update without it and that automatic updating will NOT install it successfully. The result is the system can not update. Period. If you have any difficulty with them, please email me at my username at gmaildotcom < use mowgreen instead of username, . instead of dot > the commands you gave me to put into cmd all worked fine apart from one: regsvr32 wudriver.dll to this i have a regsvr32 window pop up saying >> The module "wudriver.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "wudriver.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

I have a Vista Home Basic 64bit. I am encountering the same problem with the Winows Update. I tried your suggestion, after all the others seen in the different fora, but running the windows installer 4.5 for Vista SP1 64 bit (Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu) was not possible. 'De Updategeldt nietvoor uw systeem' (update not suited for your system) Is there still something else I can do?

I started having the same problem with Vista Ultimate 64 after Sept 16th 2008. I have one question about the above advice. It seems to me the correction is for a 32 bit system, not a 64, is that correct? I am hesitate to start something that may crash the whole system. My previous system was Win2000, and I have had nothing but problems after upgrading to Vista.

I have read quite a few forums on this problem and it does seem to me that the solutions given only work on the 32 bit and not the 64 bit. I myself am having the same problem on the 64 bit and none of the solutions listed above or on any other forum I have found are mentioned to work on the 64 bit system. Please if anyone figures out what to do in order to correct this error let us know.

I also have this problem....not able to update Vista X64 after installing SP1 in 2008 11. Also, screen savers and sleep options dont work anymore. Very frustrating to say the least. Is this a Vista 64 problem that people are trying to fix using 32 fixes? I have also tried everything, including Microsoft support help and they just archived my problem and didnt offer anything else after suggesting a few fixes that obviously didnt work.
