Windows Update Daily Ritual
I am getting very tired of saying yes to virus definition updates each and every day, all for the sake of wanting to know what I'm downloading first in the case of other files such as Internet Explorer updates and so on. When are Microsoft going to get this right?1 person got this answerI do too

This is annoying, even if I've disabled windows defender it still persists. Someone should fix this.

you probably have Vista set to not auto-update. Turn Automatic updating onclick start, select control panel, security, windows update,(left-hand pane) change settings. Under 'important updates' select 'install updates automactially', under 'software notifications' uncheck 'show me detailed notifications when new microsoft software is avalible'I hope this helps.

cf. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/7e1311da-af3b-429c-9328-655e10306aae 1. Unless you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed (which I doubt since Automatic Updates keeps updating Windows Defender, which is disabled by default when you install MSE), you are not being offered "virus definition updates each and every day" since Windows Defender is not an anti-virus application.2. If you wish to disable Windows Defender, please do so (though I wouldn't advise it since you have no other anti-spyware application installed or an anti-virus application installed, according to your other threads). For something that is supposed to be protecting me, the fact that it can't operate independently of the WSUS is a bit troubling to me because certain programs (like MSE) should be able to operate regardless.

See...Can I install MSE to clean up my already-infected computer? http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msescan/thread/87058857-d181-4019-a723-efd9a49d9275~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Anyway, I installed MSE I guess that's the future of it but still Windows Update is such a pain in that it won't pause (only cancel) currently selected downloads. Please MS make it easier and more flexible. I can only hope that if I disable MSE for whatever reason that it won't bug me like windows defender or rather windows update.

What you can do in Vista is hide the update so it does not prompt you.
