Windows Security Center doesn't recognize McAfee Virus Protection
Hello,I just got my brand new Dell XPS 1530 with Vista Home Premium and McAfee Security Center installed. The McAfee component information page states that SecurityCenter 8.1, VirusScan 12.1, and Personal Firewall 9.1 are installed and running correctly but Windows Security Center still shows a red background on 'Malware protection' with the message 'Windows did not find antivirus software on this computer.' under the 'Virus Protection' heading and a red light next to the status 'Not found'. Oddly, directly below this box is another box with the heading 'Spyware and other malware protection' and the message 'Windows Defender and McAfee VirusScan both report that they are turned on.' along with a green light next to the status 'On'. Know what's wrong? Thanks,Scott

Hi Scott, I suggest we first perform the following steps to rebuild the repository folder and then check the result: 1. Click the start button and search on the word "CMD" - "CMD.exe" should appear. 2. Right click on it and select "run as administrator". 3. In the command window at the prompt type each line and press Enter: net stop winmgmt cd c:\windows\system32\wbem ren repository repository.old net start winmgmt 4. Then, please restart the computer and check the result.

Sean, I don't know if its a Vista Home Premium thing or not, but when you type in the line "ren repository repository.old" you get an access is denied message, even though CMD is running as the Admin. I have the same problem as Scott, windows doesn't detect McAfee even though it used to.... any other help with this would be greatly appriciated.

Hi Dereke, we need to make sure the service is stopped before using the command to rename the folder. If the service is running, we will receive the error message.

I too have the same problem. I contacted Macfee they checked to see if 'am i protected' was yes then everything is ok on their side so they said to contact Microsoft. The knowledgebase http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952923/en-us says to uninstall, apply the hotfix, and reinstall the antivirus program, Or wait until the next windows update.. It said one of the symptoms was the windows firewall was off...mine is on, so I am not sure if this fix applies to my pc. Anyways I can wait for the next windows update.

After contacting Microsoft - theysaid to uninstall and reinstall McAfee. Windows Security Center now reports McAfee. To uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)- http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

The first command needs to complete successfully before you can rename the file:net stop winmgmtIf it does not stop successfully, try figuring out which applications you have open that would be holding it open. On my machine, I had to manually exit the Vista Security Center and I also closed the Dell Broadband Utility just in case. It may be different on your computer. After this completes successfully, continue with the rest of the instructions and you might succeed.Even with successfully renaming the repository, Security Center still does not recognize McAfee on my machine, so I will be reinstalling it as is suggested below.Erik
