Windows Remote Desktop: Error 5
I have a WinXP virtual machine running on a remote host, and it works just fine when I'm connecting from my Win7 desktop. However when I try to connect from my laptop (also Win7) It just says Error 5 and something about running out of memory. However the laptop has 8GB of mem and loads of free disk space so that shouldn't be an issue. Everything else works just fine. The computers are in the same LAN, the connection options are the same (however the resolution on the laptop is smaller), there are no firewall restrictions or such. I can find multiple similar issues when googling but no definitive answers. One hint was to make to simultaneous connections to the host, but that didn't work for me either. Other suggestion was to remove the Default.rdp but that didn't help. When I monitor the network connections to the WinXP host, I can see the laptop connecting that machine just fine, but still cannot open the remote desktop. I also tried from a third computer outside the network through an ssh-tunnel and even that worked fine, so it's something else. Thank you for any assistance.

Hi, Let us configure NTLM authentication level 1. Click Start, type in Secpol.msc and press Enter. 2. Expand "Local Policies" and select "Security Options" 3. Locate "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" in the list and double-click it. 4. Change the setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session if negotiated" 5. Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP Based (including secure RPC) Clients 6. Change the setting from "require 128 bit" to unchecked (No Minimum) 7. Click OK, and exit.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support
