Windows Network Adapter Alias
How can I create the equivalent of a linux ethernet alias in Windows 7? I have a single physical adapter which needs to be bound to two different subnets with different default routes. 172.16.2.10 gw 172.16.2.1 metric 100 172.16.15.10 gw 172.16.15.1 metric 200 I have some software that can specifically use one adapter or another so most applications can use the lower metric gateway while letting that software use the specific interface with the higher metric. I cannot figure out how to alias a physical adapter in windows, how can I do that?

Hi, you can normally change name of any network adapter. Go to: Start - Control panel - Network and sharing center - Change adapter settings (right menu..) - click on any connection - press F2 - change name.

Of course I can, don't need to do that. I'm looking to have an alias to that ethernet device which can be targeted separately by a route, the same way it can in any flavor of linux.

Hi, You can add another ip to the LAN adapter: 1. Go to the network properties of your adapter 2. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties 3. Click on 'Advanced' 4. Click on 'Add' 5. Enter an IP address and subnet mask on the network. If it does not work, you can refer to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wasinfo/v7r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.websphere.edge.doc/lb/info/ae/tcfg_aliasloopback.html for more information.
