Windows Live Sign in assistant breaks shares
I have several non windows devices and XP systems accessing shares on my Windows 7 box. Homegroup is disabled and These systems are not members of a domain.. When I try to install Live messenger it also installs the Windows Live sign in assistant. As soon as this happens nothing can connect to my shares, I get prompted for a username/password - but no matter what user name I provide the devices cannot connect.I have also seen threads on other sites where people are having the same problem. I like live messenger, but it appears they made the sigh in assistant a requirement for messenger because when I uninstall it messenger won't sign in.How can I stop the sign in assistant from interfering with my windows file share authentication?

I suggest you open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager, add Windows Credentials for every other computers. Then check if you are able to access the shares on local network.Arthur Xie - MSFT

The issue's when I try to access resources on the Windows system from non-windows systems. Of course the non-windows systems do not have a "Credential Manager".If I'm going from one windows system to another there's no problem. If I uninstall the sign in assistant the non-windows systems can access the shares again.

I am also having these issues... was having I should say. I removed Windows Live Essentials Beta and all is well again. Before that I had tried to disable the 'Windows Live Sign-In Assistant' service, but no luck. I was still able to connect to my file share on my Win7 box from a mac and another Win7 laptop, but my WDTV Live kept giving me the Invalid username or password error (http://community.wdc.com/t5/General-Discussions/WDTV-Live-Windows-7-quot-Invalid-Username-and-Password-Please/td-p/20412). I also tried removing just Live Sync Beta, but had to completely remove Live Essentials (which was just Movie Maker remaining). After the uninstall and restart, I could log in to my file share with the WDTV Live again. This seemed to happen not after installing Movie Maker, but only after installing Live Sync Beta later on. I imagine there are a number of apps in the Live Essentials package that will lead to this issue. I also tried a few other things like disabling SMB2 and SMB3 in the registry, but no luck there. I tried setting "Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options > Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" by another suggestion, but no luck there either. Live Essentials had to go.

I uninstalled Live and got Trillian (Pidgin is good too). It was causing problems with my Linux box and when other computers tried access. Also I like to create my playlist in this form "\\CPU\Public\Music\Electronica & Trance\Daft Punk-TRON Legacy (End Titles).mp3", but when I try to play it on my local computer or if I try to access my shares on the same computer it fails. e.g. from "\\CPU\" I try to open "\\CPU\Public\Public Music" Only thing with not having live I can't use the stream to in Win7.
