Windows Live Mail update forcing users to create a Live account? Support headache for us!

Since Microsoft remove Vista's excellent Windows Mail from Windows 7, which was the transition point for users of Outlook Express, we've installed Windows Live Mail as the standard POP3 mail client for our user base (we're an OEM system builder). Recently, Microsoft distributed an update that's forcing users to deal with an annoying, insisting popup that they must create a Windows Live account to attach files to their emails. I'm confused by this approach, as the user has their own SMTP server to send files so why do they need to be harassed by Microsoft to utilize yet another account? This has been a support nightmare for us with our senior citizen user base and we've done a number of free service calls as we feel responsible for this situation. Should we be utilizing a different mail client for our 45+ year old users or was this a mistake on Microsoft's part? A colleague suggests it's inline with the new Microsoft "our way or the highway" theme of arrogance but I'm wondering if this was a bug of sorts, since it's illogical for a user to require a Live account for something they've been doing since 2009. Does anyone have an alternative suggestion to navigate around this problem? We've since switched to setting up our new systems with Thunderbird for email but we'd prefer to stick with Microsoft products if there's a solution to this problem. So far our changeover count, from the Windows Live Mail client to Thunderbird has been 62 and we're doing it pro-bono so it's costing us.
