I recently helped a friend with a rootkit virus. We ended up doing a destructive restore, reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows (XP) from scratch. First thing after the rebuild, we ran all windows updates. We then installed MSE and ran the norton removal tool to get rid of the pre-installed junk. It's a very baseline clean machine right now. Nothing extra installed. However, his firewall keeps automatically turning off. Periodically, the pop-up from the toolbar will let him know that it's off. he'll turn it back on, but then eventually the system will let him know that it's off again. What can be causing this?
