Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Issues
Just recently, a problem has come up with my Windows Firewall. I'm not sure what caused the change, but, I'll be browsing the internet just fine, when a little bubble pops up in my task bar that says "Your computer might be at risk. No firewall is turned on." This has happened in the past, but when I clicked the bubble to check before, my firewall was turned on, so I just dismissed it. However, just a couple of days ago I noticed that when this bubble came up, my internet connection would temporarily fail. So, when I saw the notice again that my firewall wasn't turned on, I checked. It seems that Windows Firewall is turning itself off/on. I have no idea why it would do this. I have manually turned it back on several times, but still it does this.I run Windows XP Media Center Edition, and (to my knowledge) have all the service packs/updates.-Raen1 person got this answerI do too

What third-party antivirus/security software do you have installed? What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure the computer is clean: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (version 8.5.409, virus database version 270.14.1/2407 - last updated 10/01/09). It scans every night, and I have yet to be notified of any major issues. As far as I know, the system is clean.-Raen

If you have only scanned with AVG, you don't know that the system is clean. Please do the very thorough malware removal steps outlined at the link I gave you to make sure the system is clean. Do not skip the preparatory steps, although you don't need to run Multi-AV since you have current antivirus proteciton.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Okay, I asked a computer-savvy friend of mine, he suggested Spybot. I downloaded spybot, scanned my computer, and found a Windows Security Firewall Override in my registry. Spybot deleted it, and now everything is fine again. It was a very quick, and easy fix. I can do the more elaborate malware clean below at another date, when it's more convenient for me.(http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware - posted by Malkeleah)Thanks for the help!-Raen

I'm glad you figured it out. For the future, Spybot Search & Destroy is no longer my first choice for an anti-spyware program. I think that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ("MBAM") and SuperAntiSpyware are better. Both have free versions and it isn't necessary to purchase anything. If you keep Spybot S&D, don't use any of its immunize/TeaTimer features as they cause more problems than they're worth.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
