On Saturday I tried to turn on DirectPlay (Legacy Components) on Windows 8.1 with no success. I have now spent the best part of 4 days trying to fix this issue with a lot of researching, troubleshooting, running sfc, DISM, refreshing Windows 8, repairing errors on the registry and in Windows Update (including the Fix It tool) but I still do not have the ability to enable DirectPlay or to enable or disable any other "Windows features".

I have not manually deleted the registry or anything like that because I don't have the technical skill or the desire to bodge up my laptop.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't want to do a factory reset but if it's the only way to fix this issue...

I did look at the Microsoft Update Catalog but haven't tried installing anything from there.
