Windows Explorer not responding when returning to desktop from games
This problem has been happening for months and I'm getting tired of it. It is very reproducible. I play a lot of games on my system and sometimes I have to have a game run on a lower resolution so it play smoother. When I quit a game that runs at a different resolution than the desktop, I get a "Windows Explorer is not responding" error and am forced to close or restart it. If I play something that runs at my default resolution, I can exit games run and go on like normal. If I change my windows desktop resolution and then play a game that matches that changed resolution, it will exit fine. I only get the issue when something runs at a resolution other than the current desktop. I've tried this with and without Aero, and with multiple versions of ATI graphics drivers. I've looked for solutions online but have never found anything that sounds like what is happening to me. I don't know where else to turn. Here are details from the Reliability Monitor: Description A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows. Run Process Monitor [1] in background and look what the Explorer is doing when it hangs. André [1] http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Is there something I should be on the lookout for? It is listing 1.5 million events and some have Success while others have Name Not Found. I can't even tell exactly where the crash is.

filter for Explorer.exe events and look at the duration. What takes most time?"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

The issue can be caused by third party programs or Windows Explorer add-ons. You may boot in Clean Boot Mode to troubleshoot How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 If the issue occurs in Clean Boot Mode, you may use ShellExView. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow down it one by one. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. In Process Monitor, nothing is standing out to me. There are some buffer overflows throughout as well as Name Not Found and a few others. But there were still 150K events to sort through. I tried Clean Boot and ShellExView, disabling all non-MS stuff I could find, but the Explorer still hangs. Is there a program that I can try to run that will change the resolution? Right now games are all that I have to make the issue happen and I'm wanting to make sure it isn't a DirectX type problem. Any other things I can try?

Now I just suspect that this is because the game. What is the game you play? You may try to create a new user account and log in with it to confirm if the issue occurs with new user profile. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I tried running the game on the guest account and Explorer didn't hang afterwards! I tried it 3 times and it worked fine each time. I guess that means there is something in my profile that is causing it. Is there any way to reset a profile? If I have to create a new one, will I be locked out of all my documents? I have always used my first name as my profile name so I've never had an issue upgrading. It's been happening with 4 or so games over the past 6 months. Bioshock 2 and Borderlands I remember it happening for sure, but I can't remember the other few.

Most likely, you have too many objects on your desktop. Try moving then into a folder on your desktop or elsewhere. It helped me with the same issue.
