Hi, First, since this problem occurs after you installed a third-party codec, I would suggest you to perform a Clean Boot to narrow down whether this problem is caused by third-party software. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: Clean Boot is a step of troubleshooting, we can go back to normal by running MSCONIFG. If this problem disappears in Clean Boot, you may use half and half method to ensure which software caused this problem. If the issue persists, please try to disabled preview feature by following steps: Suggestion 1: ===================================== 1. Open Windows Explorer, click Organize. 2. Click Layer Out and uncheck the Preview pane. 3. If the issue disappear please try to rebuilt icon cache and check media codec, you can run following command in Command Prompt with administrator permission to rebuilt icon cache. taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local del IconCache.db /a Suggestion 2: ===================================== If the issues still persists after following suggestions above, I suggest that you may create a dump file for Explorer.exe then we can analyze the file and find the root cause: To use Windows Task Manager to create a user-mode process dump file in Windows 7, follow these steps: 1. Start Task Manager. To do this, use one of the following methods: · Right-click an empty area of the task bar, and then click Start Task Manager. · Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. 2. Click the Processes tab. 3. Right-click the name of the process that you want, and then click Create Dump File. Collapse this imageExpand this image If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue. A dump file for the process is created in the following folder: Drive:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Temp 4. When you receive a message that states that the dump file was successfully created, click OK. Then try to repro the problem, compress the dump file, upload it via SkyDrive and post a link here. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive?wa=wsignin1.0 https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=E17EC7CA7724526A&id=E17EC7CA7724526A!117 Best Regards, Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I had the same problem with windows 7 & the download folder. It appears to have something to do with mkv files thumbnail preview. I can't give a solution other than delete the mkv files that are causing the crash. If you can't delete the files because explorer crashes too fast when you open the folder, try to open another folder like pictures or documents, click organize > folder and search options > view tab > check 'always show icons, never thumbnails' > apply. Then open the folder and delete the file(s) That seems to have stopped explorer from crashing. Until I get more info, I won't be downloading any more mkv files... which is fine since the audio is always out of sync for me, regardless of what player or codecs I use & install.

This often happens if the .mkv file is broken, or incomplete. I'm assuming that it was complete, since you removed DiVX and the file played? Your original response merely said you could now access a folder with the file type in it.
