Windows Explorer has stopped working in Windows 7 64-bit version
For the past several days, actually since my Windows 7 64-bit system has updated itself on 12 November 2009, I get intermittent and major problems with Windows Explorer which states, "Windows Explorer has stopped working" followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting..." The event from the Windows Application Log is as follows: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16404, time stamp: 0x4a765771 Faulting module name: MPR.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bdf74 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000000a1bd Faulting process id: 0x1154 Faulting application start time: 0x01ca67c5cc291ca3 Faulting application path: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\MPR.dll Report Id: 44b2056f-d3b9-11de-9389-005056c00008 I ran SFC /SCANNOW and also restarted with the installation DVD to run chkdsk /r. The latter worked for only 1 day (about 2 reboots) then I started receiving the alert again that Windows Explorer stopped working and restarted. What I also found weird is when I tried to shutdown, it logged me out and did not run shutdown.... HELP!!!!! Do I have to reinstall? I tried doing a system restore point back to last week, but when I tried, it stated that there was nothing to restore back to .... I cannot believe this ... after moving from a Mac.... Makes my life even more frustrating... PLEASE HELP!!!! Rob

There are several things that come to mind.Your best bet would be to reinstall Windows Explorer 8. I do know it's out there. The question is can you uninstall it from Windows 7.You can also trya repair"piece meal" or god forbid, you can try another browser.Renee

Hi InDorseIt seems that you're not the only one with this issue.Try this to fix it : Click Start. In the Search Bar, type regedit and press Enter. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions In the right pane delete this subkey: MachineThrottling Turn your computer off and back on for the change to take effect.

In my search i found that there are a lot of people with the same problem, but also a kind of relationship with upgrading from Vista to Win7 and the use of an older Office or Outlook.Either they upgraded or use an older Office / Outlook.Anything that fits you , InDorse ?Did you do a clean install and / or do you use Office / Outlook.

I've been having the same problem. Have tried everything to no avail. Maybe the MPR.dll fix will work. Obviously a lot of people are experiencing this. Are we going to have to wait 6 months for MS to release a SP or are they going to address it sooner? Vista was a nightmare and Windows 7's problems are not much better. I'm about ready to switch to a Mac. This is ridiculous.

I have installed Office 2003 and Office 2007 upgraded on it, and no problems. I suspect driver problems are the problem. ok ive been investigating this problem. first we need to know if is not a hardware problem. i suggest you to disable the aero theme and test the pc that way (in case your pc works, it may indicate a problem with your video card, so you can try to update your driver) why disable aero theme?...because aero theme needs your graphic card and if your graphic card is not compatible or is out of date or is damaged..that may be the problem i hope this help you

Well i dont know if this might work for you but what i did, it did work for me and since 2 days the error hadnt showed up...yet. Follow these steps and tell me if it worked...: 1. Download Superantispyware free edition(www.superantispyware .com) and install it, then download Free window registry repair (http://download.cnet.com/Free-Window-Registry-Repair/3000-2086_4-10606555.html) and install it, and also you should have an antivirus in your PC. 2. what you have to do is to run the spyware and make a custom scan, adding the System32 folder from c:/windows/, scan and delete eveything the spyware detects. (in my case it found some tracking cookies and a adware or malware, i dont remenber well) 3. make a scan with your pc antivirus too (in my case i use norton 360) 4. run the free windows registry repair and click on scan, it might find a lot of errors so after its done fix them all. Then restart your pc and it should be working great with no more problems. ;) if this worked please let me know. Thanks

Finally fixed the problem. I can tell you there will not be a 'one fix fixes all' solution unless it comes from MS. Each solution is going to be different for each person until then. Which is not good news. I tried the solution above and it didn't work. In my case, whenever I booted up, I right clicked on the desktop and the hour glass would go for several seconds, then the error would pop up. Whenever I tried to open files, the hour glass would go and it would take a while for each folder to open. Then the error. Finally, I ran MSCONFIG in the Run box and deselected all start up items. Rebooted and the error was gone. Right clicking on the desktop was instant, as was opening files. No hourglass, no errors. Then I continued to run MSCONFIG and checked one program at a time to start on bootup. Rebooted, start over, checking one program at a time. When I checked and started a program called "JustDeals" by www.merlinsoftware.com the problems started again. The hour glass and errors. I put it in every compatibility mode. Windows 98 seemed to help a little but the error still reared it's ugly head. I then unchecked JustDeals and went through checking the rest of the programs to start at bootup. With JustDeals not running, all is good. JustDeals is a propriety program for auctions. I doubt the masses are running it. My best suggestion is to do what I did with MSCONFIG.

I wonder if you can run that program is XP compatibility and see if that works properly. If not use the Virtual PC mode and put the program there and then use the VM for legacy applications.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Green for you! Tried all the compatibility modes. Nothing worked. Set up an XP Virtual PC and JustDeals is running great now. Thanks, never thought of doing that. A lot of people won't be able to do that though since their BIOS may not have that option. I guess I'll have to run it in XP Virtual until JustDeals releases a new version. I am glad to know it's only one program out of 100 causing the problem. But it's obviously a wide spread problem with numerous applications. Seems like the MSconfig thing is the best way to track it down. At least it was for me.

I am a much earlier adopter of Windows. I eve had Windows 1.01 that I used with Word for Windows 1. For those who care, Word 1 was much lamer than Wordpad. I also have used Windows 2. Not sure if I can do that. It's more of a a temporary fix until MS can do something on their end. If it was just my software, JustDeals, I'd do it in a minute, but it's happening to lots of people, all who have the same issue but different circumstances.

I have had the same issue to the point of wanting to pour battery acid on my PC. It makes no sense to me but I went through all of my programs and when I did an uninstall on my windows media player this issue went away. Now I know I have not "solved" it so I should take the time to look into it and see why there is a conflict but it works for now. If any MVP's out there have any comments on that it would be appreciated.

Don't want to get anybody's hopes up, but I think I fixed my problem by downloading, installing and running Registry Mechanic. Brand new machine with almost 200 registry errors!I had one place, in printers that if I hit Apply, it would restart Explorer. After RM was installed and run and fixed all of the problems, the problem went away. I have a licnese for RM, but I would imagine that if you don't feel like shelling out the $ for that program, download "CCleaner" which will clean up the registry as well. Hope it works for you...I had to go through Dell replacing the hard drive and setting my computer up 2X to still have the problem. I'm running Win 7 64 bit AMD quad. Happy Holidays.

The error message: windows explorer has stopped working is no longer a problem for me however I think this solution will only give some of you a clue to resolve the issue. Here was my scenario 1. I was using Vista. Due to a virus problem I installed PC Tools & Spy Ware Doctor above my current Roger Antivirus in place 2. My Vista OS system was crashing non stop 3. I did a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade- regular crashing still occurred while doing any file management processes Resolution Uninstalled Rogers Norton Antivirus (not compatible anyway with Win7) ... I kept only PC Tools & Spy Ware Doctor My system is stable so far for 3 days (knock on wood) Summary It is clear to me that some applications conflict with each other and hinder the operating system to work well. As others have suggested, be cognisant of all of the applications that are running (including drivers) when your system crashes; one may be the culprit. Good luck with the issue

Step 2: Run the following commands to rename and replace the old MPR.dll. Ren C:\Windows\System32\MPR.dll MPR.old Copy C:\MPR.dll C:\Windows\System32 Step 3: Restart the computer to check the issue. What’s the result? Arthur Li - MSFT The clean boot solved this for me. I ran malwarebytes and found nothing. Then I ran clean boot and narrowed it down to Cisco's Network Magic and I have been running it for 2 years with no problems and have it on my Windows 7 laptop with no problems. I have struggled with this issue for months as everyone else has - and I tried most every proposed solution - all to no avail. Only thing I didn't do is the "turn off everything via MSCONFIG - just too painful for me". I've finally solved the problem on my machine - on my machine the issue is definitely the NVIDIA driver. I finally got ShellExView from http://www.nirsoft.net/ - and - since my lockup would frequently occur if I right clicked the desktop - I disabled the "DesktopContext Class" - which was linked to the "NVIDIA User Experience Driver Component"... (I also disabled "Briefcase" since it was a Context Menu and I never use it... and didn't reenable it to see if that was the problem - just glad the issue appears to be gone.) Voila - NO PROBLEMS... Finally - it's working... I hope this might help someone else ... I know I've spent HOURS and HOURS trying to fix this - and cursing this ... Harold Gray
